Is anyone with a 2013-2015 MY and a 6.7L Cummins doing Blackstone oil analysis?

If yes, can you please post your iron and copper PPM numbers along with the miles when the samples were taken?

With a little over 13,000 miles on the odometer and two samples analyzed, my 2014 still has copper and iron numbers WAY above than the "universal averages." Blackstone suggests it's probably just component wear-in and nothing to worry about... yet. I'd sure like to confirm these results against some other new engines.

Everything else on the oil analysis report looks normal.

I know my Hemi is different, but I had Copper of 210 at 800 miles and 110 at 3,400 miles. The Iron was 39 and 37. Both are well above the alarm level. I just git home from Pahrump and have 6k on the truck now and will see what the next sample says. I'm pretty sure the copper is from the oil cooler. Also no filter change at 800 miles when I switched to Mobil 1.

I sure hope so! Copper is climbing in Slobber's engine which seems a little odd...

At 7,223 miles:

Copper: 41 ppm
Iron: 66 ppm

At 13,841 miles:

Copper: 46 ppm
Iron: 52 ppm

Universal Averages:

Copper: 8 ppm
Iron: 24 ppm

I've emailed Blackstone Labs and asked for a clear definition of what a "universal average" is, because if those numbers happen to include ALL diesel engines (as opposed to something more specific like all Cummins 6.7L ISB diesels), then it's almost meaningless for all practical purposes and the TREND would be more important.

i would not spend much time worrying about it. It is probably as Blackstone said . I have used oil analysis on semis for 35 yrs. You can't go by just one analysis and panic ,wait and see how the next one looks , right now you have nothing to compare it to . Besides you motor has another 87000 miles of warranty. Relax and drive.

At least my iron numbers were down..... :-laf

My average miles per hour is generally around 54.0 so my engine hours are verrrry low for the intervals I run.

This last sample was 13,256 miles and 248 hours of use. Totals on truck are 53,946 miles, 1,003 drive hours, and 81 idle hours.

Truck is currently at 83,924 miles and 1,557 hours as of May 1st, 2015....I may sample again next time.

Engine has NOT fell outta the frame-----yet. :-laf

I just received the following reply from Blackstone:

Universal Averages are based on the specific type of engine in use, so in this case, this is an average of all the normal-looking Cummins 6.7L ISB engines we've tested. This is a popular engine, so we have over 1,200 samples in the average file, and many more samples that didn't get included in the averages. The average oil change interval across those 1,200 samples is ~6,800 miles.

Any sample with obvious mechanical issues or other problems (coolant contamination, etc.) don't get included in our averages, so as not to skew the "normal" wear readings we've established. For example, neither of your reports so far have been factored into our Universal Averages, since the engine is still going through wear-in. Once we see metals improve a bit more, we'll start including your samples in the average file.

In comparison, "Unit/Location Averages" are a separate set of averages which show the average wear for a particular type of engine under your account. Right now, both of the samples from your ISB are included in that file, and those averages will continue to change with each new sample. If you ever got a second Ram with a similar 6.7L ISB engine, that would be included in these Unit/Location averages as well, but a Ford F150 with a 7.3L Power Stroke would have a separate set of Universal and Unit/Location averages.

But seriously, I can't help but wonder if our oil coolers are dissolving away from the inside! But as far as I know, no one has complained of any leaks.

At 6800 miles on my 2014 3500- LEAD: 5 COPPER: 298 IRON: 97. I expect to see reduced levels on my current sample. (second sample ready to mailed in)

From our small sampling, it's looking like extremely high copper and moderately high iron is normal... at least in the early stages.

Oil Analysis at 30k miles

Just did my 3rd oil change and am not to happy with the numbers. Copper and Iron are crazy high. All filters have been Mopar or Fleetguard and oil has only been only Rotella T6 5w40 full synthetic.
Truck has been used about 95% for towing my 11,000# 5th wheel on long trips.

I know that others have seen the high copper and iron and was wondering if it eventually goes down?

Here is mine with 15K on the oil at 30K on engine. I am guessing 1/2 the miles towing.

Some do it just to see how long they can push the oil, or to see as you can see how it's wearing, i do mine once a year or so, just to try and catch any issues before catastrophic failure.
