So, I've been searching the forum for the last hour and can't find a single 4WD conversion thread.
I won't be so naive as to ask if it is possible. Anything is possible with enough money.
The question is this: Just how expensive/difficult is it?
Is it as simple as replacing the front suspension, adding a transfer case, lifting the rear, etc...
Is the G56 specific to drive type?
There is also the small problem of the computer.
Does the vehicle speed sensor come off of the transmission for 4wd models or the transfer case?

Most vehicles will require the frame to be changed, as it is built to the suspension that is bolted to it. The transmission usually will have a different main shaft and possibly a different case. In some applications, the engine oil pan may be different. Then there is the cab, computer, suspensions, etc. .

I see no reason why not. It will make a big difference on the vehicle being converted and the donor vehicle.

I converted my '74 Ford dually from the original front twin-I-beam, coil spring axles to a single beam, leaf spring axle from a '76 Dodge motorhome. It was easy, granted, no drive train in that swap.

It usually does not pencil out as far as costs go, unless you have a great deal on a donor truck and mad fabrication skills to do the majority of labor yourself its usally cheaper to sell the two wheel drive and purchase a 4 wheel drive.

You have to change out the steering components too. The 2WD uses a rack and pinion and I doubt there's even mounting locations for a standard gear.

Except for my 98 Chassis cab. I think that would be an easy swap to 4x4 since it's solid front axle already. It's still going to be expensive.

Interchangable between RWD and 4WD? Never have been that I know of. Front suspension and steering are totally different, from the parts themselves to how everything mounts to the frame.

Converting a RWD to a 4WD is kinda like converting an Impala into a Camaro. Can it be done? Sure. Is it worth it? Nope.
