My 4WD lite (in instrument cluster) comes on "sometimes" when I am in 4WD. I know the 4WD is working because it gets me out of hot water (or mud) but most of the time the lite doesn't work. On occasion it may flash on or even stay on for a few miles (or hours) but I can't depend on it. Any suggstions on where I should start looking?

Sounds like you my have a loose connection someplace. I would start at the transfer case and work up. There is a lot of movement on the underside, so I would venture to say that's where it could be at.

There are two locations to start looking for your problem. On the front differential theres a switch(?) that receives vacuum from the transfer case switch. I'm pretty sure that vacuum is always on one side of the axle switch. This vacuum is responsible for locking and unlocking your hubs. The axle vacuum also controls whether or not the 4X4 light is on. The 4X4 light always has power, the switch grounds the power, turning on the light when the hubs lock up. On the transfer case, the switch controls where the vacuum is on the axle switch. I know this sounds a little convoluted, but. . From what I've heard, its generally the switch on the transfer case that malfunctions.

Check the switch on the front differential. Same thing happened to me. I disconnected the front switch and removed it. I cleaned the whole switch and screwed back in. I then hit the electrical connections with contact cleaner before snapping the harness connection back on the switch. No problems since. -Glen
