What does that small reset type button really do located in the lower left corner near the 4wd selector?

Still trying to figure out my transmission/transfer case problem.

Thanks

But what does it do? Actuate what? Might be related to my trans problem. With last symptom, parked on hill and rolled downhill while in gear. I'm thinking whatever the problem is it's related to the transfer case not be in the correct position.

It is for towing your vehicle , it puts your transfer case into neutral

It would move the transfer case actuator motor to the neutral position, same as a manual transfer case control lever. Just done with an external mounted motor.

OK, now we're getting somewhere. So the 4WD selector switch and recessed button control a motor exterior to the transfer case that rotates a shaft that passes thru the transfer case housing. As the shaft rotates, what happens in the transfer case?

So if that rotation isn't reckoned correctly, seems that would affect if the truck is in gear correctly. So other than the selector or recessed button, what might cause that shaft to rotate, probably slightly, to affect normal operation?

I'm beginning to think somehow the shaft is rotating over time and causing the problem I've been having for a few years.
