I have 30K on the odometer and the manual says repack front wheel bearings. I went to the parts store and they have no info on front rotor seals or bearings. They said go to the dealer. Dealer said you CAN NOT repack the bearings; his parts screen only shows a hub that the rotot bolts to which is $230. 00. It includes bearings and seal. The front spindle nut is a torque once and if you remove it you have to buy a new one for $8. 00. I don't have a service manual yet. I will be ordering one this week.

Can any one tell me is the dealer just trying to make $ 476. 00 or can I repack them for cheaper.

They do not need repacking, they are sealed. I posted this same question here months ago and someone gave me the page number in the owners manual that stated this. I checked and sure enough it was in the manual. I just can not remember the page number.

But bottom line, on a 2000 4x2 you do not repack the front bearings.

What about the 1999's?

What about on the 1999's? I think they still get repacked... . I much prefer this to the wheel just falling off going down the freeway at 80+ mph. :{

I heard starting with the '00 model year when they changed the front end steering knuckles, rotors, and brakes, the new bearings are sealed and pressed on.

The '99 should still have the old greaseable bearings. I replaced all the bearings and seals on the wifes '95 at 115k 'cause it looked like no one ever gave them any attention.

front bearings on 99 ctd

on my 99 the front bearings are sealed just found that out yesterday when i went out to pack them:mad:

I don't see why a person couldn't remove the bearing assembly and drill and tap it to receive grease. I am anew member and my truck is only 500 miles old. I saw what happened to a 98 CTD that had bearing failure. With NO WARNING at 80 K the bearings failed on a 3500 and destroyed everything -- rotors,front drive shaft,hubs,tie rods. the truck came in with the wheel at a 20 degree angle

At the minimum , I am going to take my front end apart and put never seize on all parts in front of the bearings. The driver of th truck nearly had an accident, and ceartainly would have if towing a trailer.

The amount of corrosion I saw on the bearing races (the bearing assembly has two bearings in each unit) clearly showed this bearing was dry and dirty. This problem calls for something better than waiting for your truck to destroy itself. #@$%!

I am mot going to wait for the wheels to fall off. The truck already makes a noise when cornering and it sounds like bearings.

Does anyone know if the hubs from a 1999 will fit the 2000 4x2? Is the spindle for the 1999 the same OD as the 2000 spindle?

I think DC screwed up when they changed to no maint. hubs.

I have a 4 X 4 3500 and just had the left front wheel bearing go out. Managed to pull into a dealership as the bearings were falling out of the race and the brake light coming on.

The mechanic at the dealership said he had only replaced the bearing assembly one time and that was on the 1/2 ton. The cost came to just over $500. 00 for the bearing assembly and labor. I have 45,000 miles on the truck and carry a 11. 5 slide in camper which might have contributed to the problem.

Dewdo in the other Washington.
