Competition When things get hot....

other than the control arm brackets and the spring towers, what other differences are there between the 4x2 and the 4x4 frame? Could one be converted to the other?

What vehicle are you mentioning? The cab/chassis front axle is simply a 4x4 axle without the "pumpkin". Same brakes, tie rods, rotors, control arms, sway bar... everything except the pumpkin.

If you were to convert it to 4x4, you would have to have the axle, transmission, transfer case and rear drive shaft. Of course you would have to have the same gear ratio and the rear driveshaft would have to be from the same wheelbase truck. Some trucks use a Dana "80" axle and some have the "70". Cab/chassis (solid front axle) have the "80". Some automatic trans trucks have the "70". Not sure of the specifics on that though...

Standard 4x2 has a totally different system, including the front subframe. I had a '98 3500 4x2 fender dually. It has the "A-arms" front suspension. Totally different entire front end.
