1996 2500 with 187,000 miles on it. Yesterday I put the truck in 4 wheel drive and it is making a lot of noise. I expect to hear a little more noise in the front when 4 wheel drive is engaged but this was more than I am comforable with. In 2wd it sounds fine and the front end sounds normal. In 4wd the noise is not a grinding noise but just enough noise to tell me something is not smooth. This is on the road driving straight ahead not while turning. Any ideas on what could be failing. Also does anyone have any experience with the CAD not fully engaging? It seems to take longer to engage and disengage than it did last winter? Thanks!

i had the same thing on my 96 4x4,replace u-joints and that put a stop to it. the orginals had no grease fittings in them, all the needle bearings were gone, joints fell apart when the axle was pulled. make sure the new ones have grease fittings and that they are pointing inward. mine in put in facing outward and to grease them i have to take the front tires off to get the right angle to get the grease in.
