My Son-in-Law ran his '99 in 4X4 for about 10 days during a big snow in Jan.

Ever since the 4X indicator light has stayed on.

Can anyone tell me the probable problem, and where the switch is located??

Thanks

Vaughn

The switch is on the passenger side of the front axle. It is near the vacuum actuated axle disconnect. I hope this helps.

If the light is on, the axle can still be engaged with the t-case disengaged. The vaccum hoses to the shifter & axle, the switch and the vacuum motor could be the cause. It's usually the vacuum motor on the axle but I'd check to be sure. They usually won't engage when bad.

Could also be as simple has the vacuum hose being pulled loose. If this is the case you should fix it immediately because anytime it's running you're potentially sucking dirt into the vac pump.

I would check the ..."vacuum hose being pulled loose" first

but he might also try backing in an "s" pattern. Th reason I say this is because of the possibility of mismatched tires.

Having said that, the chances of it staying in 4X4 since Jan with anything other than a frozen actuator or loose vacuum line seem remote.

It was Son-in-laws truck. They live in Vancouver Wash, but are keeping a new boat at our place till they get a pad and such for it at a new home in Vancouver. They were only had two days off work and While here they were so wrapped up in getting some things done on the boat that he did not get to the indicator light problem. He will get back to it when he gets back to work and can get it into the shop there.

Thanks very much for the help.

I had the same problem on my 96 gas 4x4. They replaced the sensor on the axle and it cured the problem. Can't give a cost as it was still under warrenty.
