hmmm... i hope that anyone can be of assistance... i just returned from a trip thru the mountains, and needed to use 4 wheel drive... unlike all other times however, this time it wanted to grind going into 4 high from 4 low... i needed to stop to put it into 4 hi, but i noticed a vibration driving it, so i made it thru in mostly 2 high... . any ideas what might be the trouble... btw, my truck is a 91 5 speed with a low 430000 km on it... . thanx in advance...

not uncommon to get grinding while going through nuetral in the tcase. If the trans gets to spinning there is nothing really to stop it, even with the clutch pushed it will coast along.

If it gets to doing it the easiest way is to shut the engine off, then you can get it back in gear.

I'm seeing the same thing... . you need to have just a slightly positive throttle and a quick, smooth shift into 4H ... . if you hesitate, like is natural I get the giggles too... . not me the T-case. . ;)

When it comes to 4L... then it's shut down, shift, start up and go... I've never successfully been able to go into or out of 4L without the fast shutdown/restart... the price of a solid steel T-case and no chains I guess...

bob...

thanx, i still need to check out a few things as i had a growl and vibration that lessened as i backed off the throttle in 4 hi, but the noise was gone in 2 high with the hubs turned free... all the cv and u joints seemed ok at a cursory glance... but i will check. cheers

I have no trouble, and no noise going into or out of any gear in the t-case. Of course, I have a manual trans and with the clutch pushed, nothing is turning unless I'm rolling. You guys with autos should put them in park to do your range change, neutral will still have stuff whirling around. If you do this, put it in neutral with your foot on the brake and without taking your foot off the brake, put the trans in park and shift the t-case to desired position. Keeping your foot on the brake makes sure the drivetrain has no bind on it.

2 high to 4 high, sounds like maybe one or both hubs was not locked in. As long as the front and rear are turning the same speed there should be really no grinding when going from 2 to 4 high.

Mine growls in 4X4 and I know the carrier bearings on the front carrier are pitted. I suspect that I did not use 4X enough, or did not lock the hubs in often enough and the races started to rust, or else something was floating around in there. None the less, my carrier bearings are pitted, and make noise going down the road with the hubs locked, and worse in 4X4. Need to spend $30 and get new ones.

Growl or thump?

When the ball in my CV at the transfer case end of the front driveshaft got worn, there was no play in the driveshaft when trying to turn it, but when I pushed up on the driveshaft there was a little bit of side play. That side play due to the worn ball in the CV caused the transfercase front output flange retaining nut to become a little loose. This caused some noise when in 4H. It was more of a thump at low speeds though, not like ring and pinion growl.

If the truck is growling, maybe it just wants more attention :-laf
