Engine suggestions for Medium duty?

? for diesel guru's

As This month's issue of Truck Trend reports a 5. 6 MODULAR cummins is in the works. Anybody see that report? I could type some more info. Here is the PDF on the V6 and V8 units in test.

Kinda what I could gather anyhow. The testing was done in a 1500. A 300 H. P V-8 with an artificially limited torque of 420 is sure going to go over like a fart in church with all that marketing Dodge put into the the HemI. It's a tough call. The V-6 on an entry level diesel 1500 would sure be a tempting truck!

Vaughn your the bestest

Well anyhow here is the excerpt from the January Febuary 2005 issue of Truck Trend Magazine Truck trend's website

This is a 5. 6 liter Cummins V-8, A prototype Modular engine that could find its way into a 2009 model (Below 8500 GVW) Truck. No buyers have been named but the V-8 and its sibling 4. 2 liter V-6 would work well in any mid sized or half ton pickup or S. U. V . It's Common Rail Injection can either be built with a wastegated or varriable nozzle turbocharger (VNT). Wastegate model ratings are roughly 300 Horsepower (V-8) And 250 (V-6) . Theese numbers go up 350 and 275 respectively , for the VNT applications. In both aplications torque is artificially limited to 460 pound feet to prevent scattering drivelines. Cummins claims 0-60 times under 9 secconds for this 5,000 pound dodge mule at an average of 22mpg.

VNT Huh ... sounds like the thermostat company (Honeywell A. K. a Garrett) is going to use their chargers on this application.

If you look in the latest issue of TDR MAGAZINE (ISSUE 46), you will see on page 64, a complete story on these engines that were installed in a 1500 Ram! The writer, "Bruce Armstrong" also had the oppertunity to test drive the truck. His article in the TDR Magazine, is very interesting! :D

it all depends on what is cheaper. if the garrett is cheaper than the holset with the sliding collar, then that is what will go in.

What, exactly, do they mean by "modular"?

i am not quite 100% on this, but i think it means that they share a good deal of components. rods and pistons are the same, valves are the same, injectors are the same, oil pumps same, injection pump the same [so basically, everything the same except crank, cams, block, heads, oil pan, intake]...

i think gm had 'modular" engines with the 5. 7v8 gasser and the smaller 4. 3v6 gasser same engine pretty much, just less 2 cylinders

Well Gee wiz wayne my last TDR isse was submerged in Behr Hi-Gloss ceiling white paint ... along with what I assume was one of our more nicer bed sheets according to the wife ... . Me I thought it was a crappy one but who knew??

Oh I agree on the turbo issue. Garrett makes one of the nicest units out there as their VNT seems to be one stout unit. . . . . alltho more pricey when compared to the Holset unit. Holset is kinda synonomis with Cummins so that is why I made that lil poke.

The Ford 4. 6 is the one modular motor that has come a loooong way scince intro. The newer 32 Valve Mod Motor as they call em is one wicked unit.

Does anyone know if the ifs in the half ton Ram (or any half ton) is heavy duty enough to support a nearly 1000 lb. engine?

Will

Surely it's lighter. The I-6 Cummins is 1175 lbs. And rightfully so being a big ol solid cast parent bore block and all. 450 of those lbs are just the crankshaft and head lol! Now the V-8 is 835 pounds, and the 6 is 663 lbs.

The Cummins 5. 6L V8 weighs only 38 lbs more than the 360 V8. Tim where did you see 835? I saw 788 lbs.

That motor would be the bomb to put in a ski boat. Imagine how well it would pull out of the hole, and ski all day without ever worrying about running out of fuel!

Nope... . I have a buddy who is an engineer for Holset in SC. They have been working on a VG turbo for this engine since 1996. Says test mules have been out on the road for awhile, they regularly have improptu contests pulling up steep hills in locales out west. Oh, says that truck is quicker than any of the current diesels on the market, though it will not be a medium duty rating, which is pretty obvious. That's all he could/would say, but did confirm a late 00's market intro.

Man It's Tough to convey Scharcasm thru posts. The reason I made that remark on the VNT thang is All Magazines make that reference VNT . . Kinda like Grab Me A Kleenex or can you xerox this for me. Shouldah been more clear My Bad.

Anyhow Vaughn The Specs and weights are in the PDF that I Included. It sure sounds sweet! Me I am An Inline kinda guy ... make that a straight 8 and man ohhhhh man (Poor crankshaft) but Man oohhh man
