Hello all,

In short, I have an 01 CTD w 27k miles sitting on a pallet in my driveway. It was bought to pull the vacuum pump and for spare parts. There was some initial fantasy about it being part of a project which never happened. I was told the oil pan and valve cover was damaged. When I attempted to sell this engine, several folks discouraged the sale since the internals were likely poorly protected by the holes at the top and bottom.

Life got in the way for a few years but now I am back to this topic. I uncovered the engine while cleaning up the lot. I pulled the dipstick expecting it to be rusty and instead found shiny black oil. The oil pan is indeed twisted but apparently it never lost any oil.

It has not turned over since being stopped by a fatal impact years ago. The Ram was parted out by the owner and I ended up with the engine.

I have taped up the holes, hoses and intakes.

I am looking for opinions as to what best to do with this thing.

1) If no sales potential, I should keep it for parts(accessories). How best to preserve it?

2) If some sales potential, how to best attract buyers since I am far too uncomfortable to simply advertise as 'slightly used with low miles'. Who would be the right type of person/place to sell it to? [located in Northern New England]

3)Take the loss and sell it for scrap metal at the local yard. If so, what should I remove and cherish/sell? ECM, VP44, etc. How to properly protect such parts? FYI: I do believe that fuel is still in the line from the filter to the injectors. (this would be my wife's choice)

Thanks for any suggestions,

David in Vermont

[it's been some time since my last thread, the 99 green monster is rusting away quickly. The bumper chrome is now flexing in the wind, the cab corners are open fist size, third gear syncro is gone, but it still pulls at least as strong or stronger as the day I met HVAC (rip) and started hot rodding it. ]

If nothing else (and I am sure that there are many very good parts there), there is value just in the block itself. There's probably someone with a cracked 53 that will be looking for a good solid block.

If I were you I would take a set of good digital photos of the engine including the data plate and the damaged areas you described and try listing it in the TDR classified as well as on eBay. Accurately and truthfully describe everything you know about it and set your price. It will either sell or it won't. It won't cost much to offer it and see what happens.

As an alternative, you could pay a good Cummins shop to pull the valve cover and oil pan, inspect the internals, replace the damaged pan and valve cover, and advertise it repaired but with an inspection report. Just describe the facts as you know them.

How much do you want for it my 99 has a cracked block and may not be fixable. do you have any idea how much it would cost to ship it to Texas
