HD 5.9

Allison Transmission uses the 5. 9 in their Hybrid Drive in

40 transit buses. In that application it is rated as a HD

diesel engine.

Anything more than about 35,000 lbs is too much for continous HD use. At that point your expected life between rebuilds will drastically be reduced from the 400,000 mi interval. Also, at that weight, the HP ratings are very low, probably around 140 bHp, to keep you from grenading the engine because you will never remove your foot off the floor ;) More weight than that and you should go with a heavier engine.

I would venture to say that an FL 60 is about the limit, or a large Phord motohome. Much more abuse than that and they start to spit up the heads. :{ That is still impresive for a small diesel engine.
 
Seen a few FL70's with 5. 9's... They were rated at 190 HP. Pretty gutless when loaded. Also seen a few large motorhomes with the B in 'em. Rated at 230 HP, and pretty gutless for moving nearly 40,000 lbs around.



THe 5. 9 is a good motor, but when it comes to heavy loads, there's no replacement for displacement. Give me a C or L series, or even a DT466. :D No CAT crap, thats for damn sure.
 
I know it's not a truck or motorhome but I lifted the hood of a jet tug at work a while ago and was happy to see a little 5. 9 there. (another case of "you know your a diesel head when. . ) There not very fast but they weigh around 40 to 50,000 lbs and can push a MD-11 with fuel and passengers weighing (I think) around 600,000+ lbs
 
Some of the Sky Traks that my roofing distributor uses have the 5. 9s in them. They also tried using a 5. 9 in one of their F**D tandems that they deliver shingles with. This truck fully loaded with shingles also tows an equipment trailer with the 20,000 lb Skytrak on it. The poor little 5. 9 just didn't cut it.



Not the fault of the engine, IMHO. The responsibility falls to the person who ordered the engine in this truck, and the salesman who sold it to him.



Case/International Harvestor uses the 5. 9 in their Magnum Series farm tractors, and in a couple of their discbine/hay cutters.

A few years ago, I saw a Cummins brochure stating maximum GVW for a 5. 9 B was 56,000 lbs. 190 Hp, I think. And I did see a tandem axle drywall delivery truck in the shop once with a knuckleboom crane, and 56K on the door plate. Really too small an engine for that much weight. Still great reliability though! Those were 12 valve motors, not 24 valve.
