Morning guys, I have been having some concerns about the health and reliability of my 5.9. Truck is an 05 and has 230k and has been a fantastic truck but i was a youngster when i bought her so i def drove her pretty hard and it shows. I am worried because recently the truck was in the shop and i asked to have the mechanic look over the motor as I lose about 3-4qts of oil between changes at 7500miles apparently through the breather tube. Though the "oil cap" compression test i get haze but no pressure (cap doesnt hardly move at all). I plan to rebuild the motor around christmas. Testing that was done showed injectors and fuel system healthy but motor had blow by for sure. My question based upon oil consumption how bad is the motor? Truck has no apparent power loss, idles fine starts fine no smoke or issues.

Thanks guys

Check the turbo as it can be a source of oil consumption. You can send the turbo to Turbo Resource in Lake Havasu and they will let you know if the turbo is using oil. Do you have a coffee catch can under the breather tube to verify oil loss through it?

Has your turbo ever been rebuilt? Pull the air intake hose at the turbo intake and see if you have oil on the compressor blades. Also, pull the first flex hose after the turbo but before the inter cooler and see if there is oil film inside the turbo pipe. I had to have my turbo rebuilt on my '07, 5.9 at 70,000 miles as it was passing oil from a bad shaft seal. My turbo went to Tom at Turbo Resources. Have you ever run a K&N style gauze air filter?

You likely have some broken rings on one or more cylinders. How bad the cylinders will be is the question. Sometimes there is no damage, other times it puts a groove or 2 in the cylinder. A lot depends on why it broke, cylinder pressures, clearances, or too much heat soak in the piston. All you can do is pull it down and see what is needed.
