UPS just dropped off my 5” exhaust from Stan’s Headers. I decided it was a good idea to fit it all together and check it out before driving 200 miles to Farmington to put it on at my friend's shop. Well, guess what? NONE of it fits together. Well, one piece. Only one of the flared sections—the two piece tailpipe section—fits over the connecting section. No way in hell to fit this together under the truck if I can’t get it together in my living room.

I called Stan’s headers and told them. They are having UPS pick it up. They said that they would fix it and ship it back to me at no charge, but I’m thinking of just getting my money back.

Is it asking too much for them to CHECK TO SEE IF IT ALL FITS before they ship it?

Stan seems like a very nice guy and is willing to help. If they are having UPS pick it up and send you a new one at no charge (as it should be), I'd give them another shot. If 5" is what you want stay with Stan's IMO.

I had issues with my exhaust also. I drove with just my downpipe for several days... everything in my cab was rattling like a popcorn in a tin can. The good news is they were very good about making things right. I agree about fitting it together before shipping... it would save everyone a bunch of time. Good luck.

I paid $700 + shipping + BOXING! + exhaust tip = $830

Does that suck or what. Not only did I fork over a **** -load of money, the **** thing doesn’t even fit together. This is not rocket science. Flare the **** ends so they fit together and then CHECK IT! before you ship it.

After looking at the system they sent me, I’m shipping it back and going with the 4”. One additional thing that bothers me is they only sent 3 hangers and the stock system has 6.

I’m sticking with the 4”. It’s cheaper. Easier to install, and probably fits a lot better.

I’m not sure if I’ll get Stan’s 4” or something else. When I told them I wanted a refund they said I needed to talk to Stan. What I decide will in part be dependent on how he handles the situation.

PUFF:

Sorry about all the problems you had
but thanks for the report on the exhaust
system! I have been "shopping" around
for a "turbo-to-tail 4" system" for my
96'. The prices vary greatly and by your
report apparently the "workmanship" does
too.

Keep us posted on this! And "thanks again!"

Having been a repeat customer of Stan's for the past 9 years I would like to toss out that the service has always been top notch. I've had him put exhaust on my past 4 trucks and 3 of my friends with the same satisfaction. Although I'm sure it helps living a couple of miles from his shop as opposed to using mail order. I do understand your frustration, had same problem putting a Gibson on wife's truck a few months ago.

I just got Jannetty Racings 4" exhaust. I had them install it at thier facility in Waterburu CT. It is a beautiful kit. I paid $540. 00 plus $90. 00 to install it plus they put a nice stainless steel (polished) tip on. While i was there they had a 5" kit sitting on the floor as a prototype. If anything i would call them and ask if that one is ready. The owner, Ted Jannetty is very knowledgable on the Rams, He has 2 there as testbeds. After seeing there place, and talking to them. I would go nowhere else. www.jannettyracing.com

Thanks for the posts guys. I'm not sure what I'll do. Right now I'm kind of bummed out. I had second thoughts about the 5" immediately after I ordered it. But as the week progressed I got more and more excited about it and was all ready to install it this weekend.

I paid a lot of money for this exhaust, and it's very very disappointing to receive what I did. I'll talk to Stan tomorrow and see what he has to say.

PUFF, you need to give them the chance to make everything right, that is the true measure of service. Everyone in business screws up once in a while, the best businesses take the time to make it right and to make sure you are happy. If they are good you will be glad you bought from them. Let us all know good or bad how it turns out.

My 4" Jardine system had some really tight fits also, especially at the muffler. A little heat with a propane torch on the female ends and I had lots of room.

I agree with GKR. I have been a (repeat) customer of Stan's since he opened his exhaust business in Auburn, WA.

I have seen many different Rams with his exhaust systems, with all of the owners stating they would have him (them, actually) install another new system on their next new Ram.

EMDDIESEL, Stan's Headers builds the JRE 4" exhaust systems for Ted Jannetty (excluding the muffler)... probably the new 5" system as well.

I went a different route... this time. I elected to go with the Banks stainless steel 4" diameter exhaust system... personal preference (although I would have gone with a Stan's system had it been constructed of stainless steel).

I gotta jump in here... What the heck do you need a 5" exhaust for?! Have there been any backpressure measurements to suggest that a 5" exhaust actually flows better? Bigger diameter does not neccessarily equate to better flow. If it doesn't, then you are simply carrying around the extra weight of material, not to mention the extra cost of a setup that no one is going to even see (other than the tip).

I gotta agree with John... . what you want is a mandrel-bent stainless steel system - 4" is enough - Banks makes a nice system (sure there are less expensive ones out there). I've been to the Banks factory and seen the engineering work and testing that goes into the design of their systems. Since cost seems to be no object to them - don't you think they would have built their system with a 5" if it would have eeked out another few h. p. ?

(sorry for the long post)

the JRE 5" still uses a 4" downpipe , at least the downpipe on Frank Noble's ram was 4" , sound was nice not sure what the muffler was but i'll assume another walker .

my next system will probably be stainless , but from the price banks charges you'd think it was made of gold , stainless pipe isn't much more than aluminized steel.

John, where did you hear that JRE gets thier systems form Stan's and are you sure? I'm just curious because I bought a system from Stan's and agonized for several days over the decision between Stan's and the JRE - would be pretty funny if they are both made by the same guy lol. I will give a full honest report about the Stan's when I get it on the truck. Stan seems like a straight shooter and I hope that the problem with the 5" is resolved succesfully.

Stan installed a 4" system on my truck and I would do it again. Superior craftsmanship, fit, and service in my experience. I really don't see the need for a 5" system, but to each his own.

I tend to agree that there is probably not a real need for the 5”. In fact, that is why I had second thoughts after I ordered it. I expressed those thoughts to Stan when I called him back the next business day—I was thinking of switching to the 4” but the 5” had already been shipped—which is why I get the feeling that Stan believes I just don’t want the 5” and this is why I’m shipping it back. I’m not sure if he believes this or not, it’s just the feeling I got from talking to him, but it is not the reason I’m shipping it back. I had decided I would stick with the 5” and had it all set-up to meet my friend at his shop this Saturday to install it.

I say that Stan might think this because my conversation with him today was not great. He said all the systems are checked before they are shipped, but I just can’t believe this one was—Stan obviously thinks it was, and therefore has a hard time believing my story. He did apologize for my inconvenience, but his frustration was evident. When the subject of boxing the system came up—he charges $20 for boxing—he stated that the boxing takes ½ hour. I told him I have trouble believing that, since I reboxed it exactly as it was shipped and it took me less than 5 minutes. None of the pipe ends were protected and the system was just put in a box with all the extra stuff—hangers, clamps, exhaust tip (which was wrapped and protected) thrown in. He didn’t like hearing that and his response was rude.

However, he said he would refund my money, so I won’t say anything more until all is said and done. It’s a frustrating experience for both Stan and myself. However, regardless of what Stan thinks my motivations are, he said he will refund my money. I’ll give a full and honest account, albeit from my perspective, once he receives the system back and I receive a refund.

QuadDoorRam25004x4diesel,
What were your motivations to Jet Hot the exhaust?
Do you feel it was any benefit?
About how much was the cost to do this?

Thanks,
Ryan

Ryan... The main reason I had it coated was to protect all the time I invested in making the "true" 5 inch system from turbo to tailpipe. I figured I to much time and $$$$ invested in it to let it rust away. Price wise wasnt that bad at all. Came to $180 bucks for the adaptor plate,elbow,downpipe,92 inch strait pipe, and tailpipe section. Only thing I regret is that I didnt use Fed-EX 3 day ground to ship it. UPS charged me 100 bucks and Fed-EX charged 40 to return it... JB
