FASS install questions.

FASS, what is it?

The TDR discount ($40) only applies to the 5" system that is made by Big Exhaust. Going with this system including muffler and shipping to my house was $402. I don't think the pipes weighed as much as they had on the UPS tags. The 2 large pipes were listed as being 70 pounds and I don't think that they were half that weight. UPS is making money on these exhausts too!!

5" Pipe shiping cost

BBenz

UPS charges the 70lb rate on oversize packages until they exceed the 70lb mark. At that time they go for actual weight rates. Still reasonable when compared to truck freight.

Stuff all arrived in good shape, so worth the cost to me. :D

If we could only charge UPS for each damaged pipe. They ding the ends, so be prepared to spend some time fixing those dings and making sure your pipes will slide together under the truck.

The VERY easy way would be to find a truck shop with 5" dies to straighten things out. It'd be worth about 20 bucks.

Got that right, had the same problem when I got mine. The tailpipe was the worst. What a pain.

Big Exhaust Install

:D Install went well, and took about 4 hours including installing the Banks Brake. If you want to do a brake with your Big Exhaust use the Banks. The outlet is available in a 4" configuration, and comes with a 4" down-pipe. The 5" system (without a ex-brake) comes out of the turbo at 3", steps up to a 4" for the duration of the down-pipe, then to 5" after the bend under the truck and the transition to straight pipe.

Using the Donaldson M090535 muffler was as straight-forward as you can get. You will need to move the hanger from the stock position on the frame forward to just behind where the box welded frame section goes to open channel frame. There are holes already there. :)

When using the bigger Donaldson ($72. 50 local truck shop) you won't need the long 5" pipe section (5 footer), and with the Banks brake, you won't need the down-pipe supplied with the 5" system either.

A Sawzall is a must. A single cut about 18" ahead of the resonator will allow removal of the entire stock system. Slide tailpipe straight into muffler, and work forward from there. Chrome downturn exhaust tip supplied by Big Exhaust was way too long, but modified well. (cut and weld)

Talk to Anthony at Big Exhaust. He put me onto a great package deal, (Banks Brake, and 5" muffless) and is excellent to work with. Exhaust note is only slightly louder than stock under normal operation, but is deeper and throaty under hard acceleration. Be aware of possible clearance issues with underbed type hidden gooseneck hitch set-ups.

Overall, very happy!! Giant sewerpipe gets some looks, fer sure!Oo. Oo. Oo. Oo. Oo. Oo.

reading the BIG EXHAUST website, i saw that they have a 4" downpipe i am in the process of adding a hx40 to my truck. howhard do yall think it will be to modify it to fit?

With exhaust brake?

So, if I wanted to put a five-inch exhaust on my truck, I'd have to find one that bolts up to the brake instead of bolting up to the turbo?

Is there such a thing?

I assume the down-pipe is four-inch for clearance reasons?

I'm looking into a mufflerless system. I can't find that discount on Big Exhausts or Dodge-trucks.

I found a system at City Muffler and Performance but I haven't called them yet to find out about it. Does anyone have experience with them?

Thanks.

Ethdee I bought a 5inch exhaust system from City Muffler and Performance recently. I was going to go to Okla. City to visit relitives so I just went to their shop. The guy told me a guy named Cat Cracker off the TDR site had just bought a system ahead of me. The exhaust system is very good quality and comes with all the hangers and clamps. I did'nt use the ubolt clamps that came with the kit, I used band clamps. The muffler is a short (18-20 inch) straight through design. Man this thing has a great sound to it, very deep and mellow. I havent hauled my 5er yet, it may be kind of loud, but it sure sounds good empty. My wife says now the truck sounds like a Peterbuilt, I just said, thanks I take that as a compliment . :D . Buzz

Am I seeing large price increases for all systems on big exhaust and their sister site? No more $300. range, now it's over $400. range.

Ok guys I am considering getting this exhaust. They have a good price on it still. I am going to order it with out a down pipe because my new turbo will come with one. My question is what is the best muffler for sound and no drone. What mufflers did you use?The one included or something else. I want big rig sound at the pipe and little to no drone in the cab. I already have a drone monster with my 4 inch setup.

thanks

I have the 5" BE with the muffler that it comes with on my truck. No drone at all until about 85 mph (3. 54 rear end). Very pleased with the setup, major EGT reduction, very well built kit. Call and ask for Anthony Natale, he is the owner and an all around good guy. He'll treat ya right, make sure you let him know you are from the TDR and get that TDR discount.
