Not sure, just saw a bunch of them on this trip to Washington... everyone of them had that hollow gutless wheezing sound that the powerstrokes and duramaxs have... totally different sound than my 4-inch...

Mine sounds ok with a 4-inch magnaflow 30 incher... still not as "big rig" as the 99 did with a straight 3"...

Love the description, I guess to each his own, hardly sounds gutless to me though.

I have posted this a few times before and no one seems to take note but a Aeroturbine does a LOT to help the sound quality of the 3rd Gen exhaust. I put one on my '03 and it almost totally got rid of the raspy whissy sound 3G turbos tend to make. Night and day improvement. Sounded great reverberating off concrete walls and when I had someone drive my truck and take a couple passes by me.

why kind of systems did they have? 5" doesn't really sound any different than 4", just deeper
3rd gens don't really sound all that great anyhow. using a 2nd gen exhaust manifold helps... as do twins :D

With an Aeroturbine in the system and/or a better turbo the offset 3rd Gen manifold gives it a better exhaust tone than the centered 2nd Gen manifold IMO. Especially if we're talking the 3rd Gen ATS manifold. More of a rich basso throb compared to the 2nd Gen.

I have a 5" exhaust and I think the less retriction is best. But I will say I had 1986 IH with 3406 with dual 5" exhaust that would run over 130 mph on gps. And, that's a little bigger engine than were running.

I just installed a 5" stainless MagnaFlow turbo-back system on my 04. 5 tonight. Fits like a glove and there is a definate seat-of-the-pants improvement over the 4" straight pipe exhaust that was on the truck. The only other mods my truck has at this point are an Airaid CAI and a Stinger 2 module. I definately plan on more mods in the future so I went with a 5" system and I'm very glad I did!

I put the 5" magnaflow on mine. It is a lot deeper than my 4" and isn't so raspy with little drone. Is it overkill, probably, but I got a good deal on it with no regrets.

I looked inside mine before installing it and it did look like it wasn't quite 5" inside, but it was plenty big enough to fit my fist inside. Plus it's perforated along the inside of the muffler. I can't imagine it being restrictive as it is a straight-thru muffler. The truck definately feels like it's pulling harder with the 5" MagnaFlow exhaust versus the 4" straight pipe it had before. A whole bunch quieter, too.
