I did a search on good sounding 5" muffler's and can't decide what I want. I have a crappy sounding packed straight through muffler on now, and it sound's a bit raspy at idle! I want something not too loud, but let's the turbo sound out the tailpipe! I've been reading that the donaldson muffler's sound good, but they look like a waterheater! I think my original 5" muffler (which I destroyed when I straight piped it), was a flow-pro! I can't remember what it sounded like. I looked up a flo-pro muffler, p/n 6196, it's a baffled muffler, and I was wondering if anyone has tryed it? Hopefully someone can help or provide a sound clip at idle! I've read Forrest Nearing is the guru on this topic, maybe he'll chime in! Thank's.

lol, I'm running a M090505 on my '06, and I like it. It's hard to hear the turbo through the exhaust sitting way up in the driver's seat, but you can hear it slightly... the intake is a lot louder and a lot closer

I'm hoping that once my 71mm turbine turbo gets installed, there'll be a lot more turbo sound through the pipe.

the M090535 is similar to the Pro-Flo or Expandit mufflers... baffles with a heimholtz resonator inbetween, this one just happens to be a lot bigger.

I've always run straight piped trucks, but the '06 is so nice and quiet, I decided I wanted to keep it that way. I like the big Donaldson. You can hear that the truck's got something going on, but it's not obnoxious at all. They're cheap enough. I think mine was like $78 shipped from Ryder Fleet

also... just thinking out loud here... I have seen a lot of different mufflers posted that were supposedly "51" Donaldsons" with the part number M090353...

Mine came from Ryder in the Donaldson box w/ the correct part number labeled on it. If the muffler has the "soft plug" in it, it is NOT the M090535... I'm guessing that what happens in that case is you call and order one from somewhere, and they cross the part number and go off of the dimentions NOT the flow characteristics!

not trying to advertise for Ryder Fleet, but I got exactly what I ordered when I bought from them :)

That's funny, I got what I wished for, you chimed right in! I was thinking that maybe my HTB2 just doesn't produce the sound at idle that I'm looking for. It is definately loud when accelerating though. ! So the flo-pro is a decent muffler, comparable to a donaldson? I just don't want to buy something and be unhappy and stuck with it! Thank's bye the way for the 3 quick responses!:-laf

I just read about a 34" donaldson! How do those sound, I'm sure you've tried one!?:) Smaller, more sound I'm guessing!

I haven't tried one. The specs in their catalog show it doesn't flow as well as the big one... Try a Pro-Flow or Expandit, I think you'll be surprised by the increase in turbine sound :D

I have a very short donaldson. Baffle in the center. A 3" hole saw met with the baffle. Now it flows air and turbo sound but is still quiet. Just another idea.

I like the noise the UPS trucks make when they are Started, a Smooth Whistle @ Idle.

I know they are not Cummins.

Also, the Turbo Im running, I cant hear it outta the TailPipe ever, just @ the front and in the Cab...

If you are really set on hearing the turbo, you should go straight pipe. I know you said muffler, but I can hear my turbo at idle from the engine compartment, in the cab, down the street; wherever I want to hear my turbo I can. lol Having an aftermarket downpipe REALLY helps.

I've had it straight piped, sounded great, but felt bad for the neighbor's, especially in the winter when I get called at 3am to plow snow. I was told by a few neighbor's that they go by the sound of my truck leaving to get ready for work. :-laf I have a 4" down pipe and 5" all the way back from that now. I just listened to MBRP sound clip's on youtube and thought they sound pretty good. What do you guy's think of those?

what muffler are you running? my 71mm turbine through a 5" straight pipe is VERY prominant even at an 800rpm idle! :)

I would assume the 65mm turbine would still sing a nice song spooling down

5" muffler

I have a 5" areo muff, flows great keeps the egt's reasonable. Sounds great deep sound good turbo whistle @ idle & wide open I will get you a sound clip of her if you want.

Forrest,

The muff. is similar to a dolaldson, however even @ straight pipe it still has no sound? what kinda Turbo do I need to hear it like yours or like the UPS truck?

Do you mean the aeroturbine muffler? Aren't those expensive? If it's not a problem, I'd like to hear a soundclip. Anyone have a donaldson soundclip on a 2nd gen? I only found a 3rd gen on youtube! Thank's.

I think I'm going to put the original muffler on that came with my 5" kit originally. It's a flow-pro kit, but the company I ordered it from, doesn't sell that system anymore. Does anyone know of a place that sell's these. The muffler I had was a 30" long, 7" or 8" round louvered straight through muffle. It was a little loud but sounded good. I've been searching numerous website's with no luck! Thank's for any help. The donaldson is still an option if this doesn't work out.

I purchased a MBRP 5" turbo back kit for the 05'. Man was it loud in the cab. Especially if someone sat in the back seats. I replaced the muffler with a Hushpower and it did quiet it down some but not as much as I was hoping. However my egt's dropped about 50 degrees with the attitude on level 5 with the Hushpower, when compared to the MBRP system. My next step for quietness would be trying a Donaldson muffler.

Well ive got some straight pipe MBRP "Smokers" on my truck, it sounds really good especially when you smash the throttle, but my truck is pretty dang slow b/c it is basically all stock. Yeah plowing snow at 3am with straight pipes may be the best way to get a noise ordinance in your neighborhood! :)
