I took out my #5 plate because of too much smoke when towing and trying to accelerate. I have had this plate from the stock position to full rear. I replaced the #5 with a #8 plate but miss the extra getup and go. :( :{



My ideas to reduce the smoke are as follows, increase timing from 16* to 18* if this would help, replace the 16cm exhaust housing with a 14cm wastegated housing to spool the turbo faster, I could regrind a stock plate to the #8 at the bottom and grind the top to match the #5 if if this will help. ;)



Please advise if these would help or what you suggest to help reduce the excess smoke. :D :D
 
Have you adjusted the star wheel in the AFC housing?? this may help a little or alot... Towards the motor=more smoke, away from motor= less smoke. I have EGT problems when towing heavy cow trailers, or fully loaded horse trailers, but it is managable with the right foot. I have the power, but run out of EGT's for what I feel is in the acceptable range. . write back and let me know if you have adjusted the star wheel or not... .

starwheel

At the present the starwheel and the #8 plate are both full forward. When I had the #5 plate in I had the starwheel back 1/8" from full forward and the #5 plate & AFC housing at the rear. Should I have had the starwheel further back and the plate in the stock position?:confused:

I have the #5 aswell and when I adjusted my AFC for little or no smoke it ran like crap. Long spool up and overall ran more like a stock plate.



But yes moving your afc back would help reduce the smoke.
 
You also can move the AFC housing back towards the back of the engine. This will delay fueling 'till the boost comes up.



I agree w/ Stixx. I didn't like the way the truck performed. It was flat untill you built some boost.

true, but i've also had my AFC gutted (rack stop removed) and i was straining the pump (yeah, i could hear it). anyways, i'm making more power on the low end with just slight smoke than bellowing out the black smoke. however, "gutting" the AFC resulted in higher top end boost and was better once the turbo did spool up. smoke doesn't equal power, however i don't have first hand experience on that power level with the smaller/finite adjustments that you guys do..... yet!



just a different perspective...

Bruce,the #4 works better with the gov springs but towing heavy you might want to try the cable operated afc from ats turbo to control your fueling while towing.
