I finally got the thing figured out . Took it to Stevens Bay Area diesel in South San Francisco . He did some diagnostic work and determined it was the pressure sensor ( cummins part #3417030 ) . Charged me about 300 bucks for parts and labor , but the truck runs great . Time to loose the muffler and look into an edge EZ . Thanks for everyones comebacks . This sight rocks .

Thats why I asked about the cost. The MAP sensor is no more than 70. 00 and the rest is diag. I have cleaned the IAT in the past (in fact I am doing an otr experiment with a spare IAT in the engine compartment)

Well the Map sensor I honestly didn't think it could be cleaned. However If its anyhig like the IAT (which it isn't really as The IAT is a bulb type sensor and the MAP is a plunger / diaphram thingy within the sensor housing) you can simply unscrew it and hit it with some carb clean.

 What are the benifits of cleaning these sensor:confused: Power, mileage, or both? Has anyone done a study of the effects?

:D A curious mind is dangerous (at least in my case)

I am curious though as to the possible benifits and if anyone has documented them.

Mundgyver....

The IAT soots up after a while (especially towing with an exhaust brake) and some have said upwards of 1 MPG gain by just cleaning it.

just pull it with socket and ratchet, flush it out real good with brake cleaner. . might need a little brass brush help also. . air dry/blow out with compressed air and re-install

it's on the side of the block back behind [closer to driver] fuel filter.

note there are several very long interesting threads on the subject . . well worth the reading , do a search

Steve,

If it can give a 1 mpg gain just by cleaning, then it would be worth the effort. Thats what, about 5% improvement in economy. Thats a pretty good jump. :)

I should qualify my remarks....

I guess it will only improve mileage when cleaned ..... if it needed cleaning. With an exhaust brake and a lot of towing, I was needing to clean mine very often. I wound up doing what Marco sugggested and put it in the air intake horn. In general, this is a small loss of fuel mileage, but now I never have to clean it and don't experience the 1-2 MPG losses I was during its "inebriated" state back in the factory location.
