I have 97 with a 5 SP. Read in one of the forums about replacing the oil in the transmission every 36,000 or so. Mine is just about due. Dodge replaced the trans (whole thing) at 31,000. What oil should I use (other than the Mopar stuff), about what should it cost, and where is the best place to get it. Thanks for all the help!!

There is much debate about this going on right now. Some say you should go with the Castrol syntorque(the recomended by factory).
Others are running other synthetics in the same catogory. I run Amsoil 75-90 series 2000. I have had no problems.

Boat, fifthwheel, motorcycles, and shop. 72000 as of 3/1/01,not even broke in yet. Old Dodge 126000 miles and running better than new.

By far the best to run is Syntorq.
Unfortunately its WAY overpriced.
If you can't set up a business a/c @ a local dealership buy wholesale from Std Trans of Texas plus shipping.

Amsoil and LE both say they've fixed the GL5 issues in their syn 75w90 oils so they will work fine in place of GL4. I'm going to switch to one of them this spring.

RamthatStroker, there is an artical in the current issue (31) on page 23 about Standard Trans. On page 24 their address is given as 1000 N. E. 29th St, Fort Worth, Tx76106 (800) 783-8726. http://www.standardtransmission.com

Lubrication Engineers in Tx. I started using their 15w40(4. 62/qt) last year and my reports are very good. The DCI+(7. 5cents/gal-cost to treat) fuel treatment is excellent too. They're high quality and high priced products. They're also a bit of a pain to get(they don't sell small quantities)but I don't have to leave the house to get their stuff either. I buy either direct or thru a local rep. Craig

Recommend Royal Purple MaxGear 75W90

Have 100,000 + on the 75W90 in my 96 3500 with 120,000. Shifted smoother than the Syntorq when replaced. Also used RP products in my 89 with the Getrag which is still running strong at 300,000 on the original trans.

Available at some Napa's or check www.wynerlec.com or 888-382-6300
Should retail for 7. 95 -8. 95 a quart.

Redram, the first time I talked to Oilguard they said RP was super stuff. They said better than Amsoil. The 2k75w90 is doing great in my Dana 80! I've read the racers like it. Craig

Unquote...

Ah, forgive my ignorance (see No. of posts). Who is LE? Reminds me of the time I tried to find a quart of Syntorq for a Ch**y on a Sunday morning in Henderson, Nevada...

I did not know Amsoil's GL-5 was broke in the first place!!
Who comes up with this stuff??

LE is Lubrication Engineers, a small company that specializes in Industrial/Commercial oils. Very Good products.

Gene,Have been a dealer since 95(when myself and the Ox got together). Love it,cut me I bleed Amzoil. I think Gene and I have something else in common. Could it be our choice in trucks?I think almost the same as you Gene, just look at things from different angles.

Amzoilman, signed me up,shortly after my first TDR. This was BC(before computer).

Talked to Royal Purple. They say Maxgear 75w90 is GL5 and not only exceeds any grade under it but is meant to replace any grade under it and is not corrosive. $6. 50/qt in 12qt/case at Madcap in Denver. I'm due for a 'change' anyway. The 2k75w90 has been supurb - this might be better - time to find out! I'm certainly not impressed with the nearly black Castol stuff with only 32k on it! BTW, I found them at royalpurple.com. I found online stores and local distributors. Craig

I wouldn't discount the condition of Castrol or any other lube that the unit was broken in with. JMO, but all lubes would exhibit heavy contaminates from the break in process.
Shoot... NVG probably puts dirt in it from the start to sell you more units! #ad

Lets get some new owner to drain their transmission oil as soon as they drive it off the lot & replace it w/ their lube of choice.
Then you might have an interesting comparision #ad
Any takers?
Mike
