Got the transmission out today and the mainshaft is the culprit. It broke just behind forth gear. I love all this new found power!!!!!!!!!!

I saw standard transmission has the replacement shaft, are there any others that are good to deal with?

1tony1,

I have used www.enterpriseengine.com Ask for Doug.

They have everything you need plus new trans if you need one.

Top notch shop, also they have a monster Dodge Cummins pulling truck that they test parts with.

They know what not to put back in,!!

Tell us what clutch you have and what exactly were you doing when it munched?

My poor old Sickly Ram with 600 hp, about 1400 ft lb is running the Standard Trans parts in its NV4500. They are great to deal with, call 800-std-tran.

In July I towed my trailer to Colorado on I-70. In the rain and after dark I was surprised to find I was passing everyone like they were parked. Then I got a glimpse of a sign at the side of the road, Vail Pass 10,xxx (didn't get time to read it all) ft. I wonder what those gas pigs felt about being blown away by a Ram pulling a trailer. I was only going at the speed limit on cruise control (I think it was 65 mph). Sickly had several inches of pedal travel left "for passing" if needed :D

Sickly's current trans is a 1998 NV4500 that I got "free" because it had blown 3rd gear, the counter gear, etc. I got all the gears, bearings, fully splined mainshaft, etc. from Std. Trans. They were helpful, fast, and didn't try to sell me anything I didn't need. Their prices were 'way lower than Dodge.

MGM, I have the Centerforce clutch, it along with the engine I had just rebuilt were in two days when it broke. The engine has a

#10 plate, nonwastgated housing,governer-afc and valve springs.

What was I doing... ah... hopefully spankin my buddies 24v auto with a box on it. We were at the drag strip at a privite test n tune for an Outlaw car so we had to see what the duallys would do. At the last outlaw race, after qualifying the 24v spanked about three powerchokes and a new Mudstang GT automatic. This next outlaw race we are also having what is now known as the dually nationals. The race got rained out this weekend and is rescheduled for next weekend. Hopfully I will have my transmission back in. If we had been on the road The tires would have probably turned over at the 2-3 shift but the track will almost pull your shoes off so there was no tire give at all.

Centerforce with a SPRUNG hub, correct?

Looking hard at an un-sprung hub clutch, but the Nervous Nellies think it will hammer the input shaft too much. Looks like any clutch can hammer it, eh?

Thanks for the info, glad you had fun!

BTW,

I just found out that Enterprise Engine now has Larger, HD input shafts for the 5 speeds.

The downside is, you need a larger hub in your clutch.

Which they have.

Next time you need a clutch AND an input shaft, you may want to check into it.

It would seem that Std Tran is not the only transmission shop that has the NV4500 design flaws figured out.

Also try Rockland Std Gear in NY 1-800-227-1523

Also try ATS in Denver 303-431-7973 I think they source some parts from Rockland, but I'm not sure. Anyways they are knowledgable & are very TDR friendly. They also offer a GREAT warranty on a rebuilt NV4500. 2 year 65K miles

As old as the NV4500 is I'm sure there are many others that offer competive pricing on updated parts to correct the widely known NVG design flaws.

Quite frankly, the NV4500 can take a certain amount of abuse & big power, but very few last a long time, power or not.

I'm surprised some company doesn't step up to the plate & produce a HD 8speed that can take ALL THAT TURNED UP CUMMINS POWER & TORQUE. If Dodge sourced something like that, they could literally laugh at the competition. Why don't they?
