What is the best way to remove the shifter out of a 94 5 spd. I am pulling my transmission this weekend and would be a whole lot easier if i could get the shifter out of the trans first. thanks,

Lance

I think it is the same method as the Chevy version I had. Pull the round protective boot loose from the transmission. There is a steel cup that fits inside the aluminum shifter housing that the shifter handle stud protrudes through. With a pair of channel locks and heavy downward pressure to compress the spring, turn the cup approx. 1/8 turn counter clockwise.

The best way to get the shifter out, after taking the boot and the t-case lever loose(from under the truck). Is to sit in the middle of the truck and look directly down on the shift knob, grab with both hands and pull up and toward your head. This way when it comes loose and smacks you in the head, you never forget it. :-laf

Our shifters just push on to a square peg with a snapring. Can be on there mighty tight though.

LOL, that is ecaxtly how I learned it :-laf

I also remove the 4 screws that hold the shift stud on and remove that top piece, then I toss a rag over the top of the transmission, little more room when removing it.

Your's is a 97 Scott, they changed them. On a 94 the shift tower is not removable. You'll have to push the pivot ball down and turn CCW about 1/8 turn as stated above to remove the stick in a 94. The newer ones (97-03) with the 4 bolts are sooo much easier.

humm. i just pulled mine tonight and i dont remember any four bolts. manual said press down with 2 long screwdrivers and turn. WTH? got ******, pushed down with my thumbs and that was it.

98 is when they did the switch. They had the bolt on top. I went ahead and pulled the transmission with the stick still on it, but i'll take it off now. Didnt try too hard yet, but didnt know if there was a certain tool to use to depress the spring and turn it. thanks,

Lance
