5 Speed 5th gear noise

My Ram is a '97 with a five speed. At 24000 miles a new transmission was installed under warrenty. Fifth gear was very noisy. For the first several hundred miles the new one sounded OK. Now fifth gear is making the same noise. The noise sounds like an old fashsioned spur gear transmission were you can hear the gear backlash. Are there any TSB's covering this? Any similar experiences.

I've read that folks have had problems with the 5th gear nut backing off and then losing 5th gear... could the symptoms you are experiencing be the warning? Sorry I cannot add any solution I have just seen one truck with 5th gear nut failure and read on the net of several.

If it is still under warranty take it in NOW! and keep taking it back until they fix it. My co-worker has a 97 and is on his 3rd 5speed (1st 2 died of fifth gear failure). In all fairness, he treats his truck worse than you'd treat an enemy, but you can never be too safe... and if your transmission does grenade later down the road, the fact that you had taken it back to dodge a couple of times can't hurt your barganing position if you find yourself out of warranty.
