I pull a 13,000 lb 5er and during the summer my trans temps stay around 170 to 180 while on the highway. I have two Fast coolers installed. A couple of weeks ago I was climbing cabbage hill (I-84, east of Pendleton, Or. ) and discovered my fanclutch had died. After letting the engine cool back to 180 at a pull-off I attacked the hill again, this time in 3rd gear at about 30 mph, A/C off. The engine temp stayed at about 200 but my trans temp climbed to 220. Does anyone know at what temp Castrol Syntorq breaks down?

Hey Gary

Are you headed back yet?

My oil temps run about what yours do without the coolers but I dont tow nears as heavy as you. I dont know for sure what the limit is but I bet 260 would be ok with the synthetic

I'm just guessing here but I'd say 260° is pretty close. I wouldn't want it any hotter than that. My problem with that Cabbage hill is all the 45 mph corners. How am I suppose to climb it at 80? :D

John, I'm back.

It could be worse, if you had a GM D/A combo and depended on their tow/haul mode to slow you down, with a 13,000 lb trailer you would be DESCENDING it at 80
