Engine/Transmission (1994 - 1998) NV4500 gearing

I have a 5 speed in my truck with 180,000 on it. The last few monthes it has been jumping out of 5th gear when decelerating only. Yesterday I pulled the transmission to do a clutch job and popped the rear and top cover from the cast housing. Inside I found that someone had previously done the 5th gear update(I bought the truck with 80k last May 04) and it was still tight. Everything inside looks good yet and rolls smooth and the syncros look good yet. Upon further inspection I found the lower gear below 5th gear had a piece of one tooth missing but I was unable to locate anything in the old fluid or the bottom of the case. Has anyone here dealt with a similar situation and found a fix for it jumping out of gear? TIA, Chris

i also have had the same problem when i use my pac brake in fifth gear. it has only happened a couple of times. it on my list of things to get fixed, sorry i don't know the solution but maybe this post will help us both. the first time it happened it scared the #$*! out of me.

With that many miles on it, I would suspect that the shifting detents/forks are worn out, I would seriously consider doing a full rebuild/replacement. That missing tooth probably got broke when the nut backed off the first time.

Tom

Synchronizer rings or the main shaft/input shaft bearings. The missing tooth should not cause it to jump gear, and if it wasn't making noise before you tore out the transmission, should be ok to leave in.

Put synchros and bearings in and you're good for another 180,000.

Well I found out my problem is the top plate on the transmission that all the shift forks are on. Last night I backed up and was unable to get it out of reverse so I jabbed it hard a few times and it finally came out when I shifted the transfer case to neutral (thanks Amianthus). Today when I was running with a loaded trailer it never popped out of 5th once even with the jake on so I called a reputable transmission shop and they told me they get alot of this same situation and replacing the transmission top cover will fix the problem. I ordered one today and will install it tomorrow.

When Aron Howlett and I pulled the transmission for the clutch 2 weeks ago we inspected the synchros and bearings and such and everything still looked great... it was questioned by us on the top plate the way it went back on. As I stated before the 5th gear nut was replaced before I bought the truck so that is not the problem.

I plan on trying the top plate and if it still acts up I will be doing the 6 speed swap shortly thereafter.

thanks for the replys guys! Chris

well I got the transmission out and pulled the top cover off everything looked good so I pull the rear cover to expose the 5th gear area and I found my 5th gear shift fork broken in half and my countershaft has very excessive play as the bearing is GONE! Guess I'll pick up a reman transmission tomorrow and get it back together by tomorrow night.

Well I wish I would have called the first of the week to get a transmission because I called today and can't get it until Monday. My cost is only 1150 for the reman with a 1 year unlimited mileage warranty. Any takers on bringing it to me and helping get it installed? It's located in Zumbrota,MN. It never fails that my truck breaks right in the middle of my busy season. Three years in a row now... . I don't recall breaking any mirrors either! Chris

I had 5th go out on me totally. When I had the fix done the guy said something about the gear retainer. I also had a tooth brocken off the acual gear. Don't know if this will help but it might lead you in a good direction.

Eric

well I finished getting my reman slushbox about 1 am last night and wow I can't believe how much nicer it shifts. I swear I will never pray to the transmission installer fairy again... . I was gravely dissapointed!

Repeat after me, DO NOT TOW HARD IN OVERDRIVE. I've seen it too many times. Don't believe me? Put a temp gauge in it and notice the diffrence between 4th and fifth.

I don't recall stating i tow in fifth gear though? I've also decided this truck isn't worth a 6 speed swap and quite frankly I am fed up with shifting and this thing falling apart around my mighty Cummins. In 6 monthes I have replaced on this thing:

water pump

belt

5 lift pumps

4 carrier bearings

3 wheel bearings

head gasket

vacuum pump seals twice

2 front bumpers

headlight and park lamp assembly

shocks

APPS

Map twice

IAT

2 sets of front brakes

etc etc

Maybe I just need to have more than a week go by with no breaks and I will be happy again? :(

Ahh just go to Hooters and talk to that cute little waitress again!

I know that would make me feel better!

Josh

*Puts on flame suit*

Why dont' you get an Automatic from Goerends... ... .

Sorry for your bad luck, seems like an aweful lot to break in such a short time. You did get my curiosity though.

Two front bumpers?
