First let me start off by saying I just joined this site. I have been lurking for about 6 months now. That's how long I have owned my CTD too by the way. I have really enjoyed reading this site so far, so I decieded I should take full advantage of the site and the knowledge out there too!
So here's my problem. Over the last month my transmission has been getting harder and harder to upshift and down shift. It started with 5th gear getting harder. My first thought was the "NUT". However, then 2nd, and 3rd started to get harder too. 4th is still fairly easy, however, it is gettting harder too.
The gears are kind of "snappy". You have to push or pull the gear lever pretty hard and they just snap out of gear and then you have to do the same to get into the next gear. 5th gear is very hard to get into. Also, the faster I am going the harder it is to shift. For example, from 2nd to 3rd at about 15 mph is very easy. At 20 mph it is much harded and so on. At a dead stop all gears are easy to get into.
I've done some trouble shooting. My first thought was that expensive oil was breaking down. So I changed that out. No change. My second thought was the clutch was not completely disengaging. So I lifted the rear end off the ground and with the engine running I depressed the clutch and the wheels stopped turning. One thing I did notice, that seemed out of place though was, in neutral the wheels were turning. That seemed strange to me.
I was reading on one of the transmission sites that sells the NV4500 that a bad pilot bearing could cause this shifting problem too.
I hate to pull the trans with a wishy washy feeling about what the problem might be. Has anyone else experienced this problem? If so, what was the cause? IF you haven't had this problem and you have an idea... please share it too.
Thanks,
Rick
