My truck - 2002 3500 4X4 Dually with 24v Diesel 5 speed manual transmission with 106000 miles.
I recently had my 5 speed manual transmission rebuilt at a reputable place in Dallas TX. A friend pulled the transmission and reinstalled it after I had it rebuilt.
The problem - running down the road in 5th gear and you let off the accelerator completely it will come out of 5th gear. It does it more often when pulling a load. Even with the cruise control on if you start down a hill and the accelerator backs off completely it will come out of 5th gear. My question - is there an adjustment on the shifter to make sure it is all the way in 5th gear or could it be the transmission? I talked with the company that rebuilt the transmission and they said they've not heard of that issue before but they have heard of a transmission coming out of gear while pulling.

Need help. I don't want to have to pay to pull the transmission again only to learn that nothing is wrong with it.

Something is wrong. It should not come out of gear at any time unless you shift it. No adjustments for the shifter.

Wade Transmission in Dallas. They said they would take a look at it but I have to pull the transmission and take it to them. I don't have the tools to pull it so I have to pay an independent mechanic to pull and replace.

Yep, that stinks.

Why didn't you just take it on over to Standard in Ft. Worth? Nothing against Wade, just that Standard has an excellent rep, especially here on TDR.

If it can be removed with the transmission in the truck I would have the mechanic pull the top of the transmission and check the shift fork for fifth gear and also the detent for that gear. bg

I bought a truck that did that once it was a broke spring that holds the shift collar in position . In your case I would think it might be in the shift tower since you had the trans rebuilt unless they just replaced what was bad and didn't look at anything else .

This is what the fifth countershaft gear looks like and the 3 springs and struts that lock the shift collar engaging fifth gear If a spring is broke or bent shift fork or week spring in the shift tower it can pop out of gear if any so called reputable shop told me they've never heard of it happening before I'd find a new shop but like most shops and trans builders of course they haven't seen it before they want to try and make it your fault m
