Driving 70 to 75 mph, empty, my trans temp is about 170 when the outside air is in the 90s. I have a set of fast coolers installed. Seems kinda high to me. Is it?

I know I'm not the only one with a temp gauge in a 5-speed. What are your temps running without the fast coolers?

No Fast Coolers and 4:10's, I will see similar temps under those conditions. Other than heavy towing, that's about the only thing that brings the temp up.

Mine is a six speed so not an exact comparison but here are some temps.
I use the required Texaco mtx fluid. I have had a trans temp gauge on for about 13,000 of my 23,500 miles. I just installed fast coolers recently.
Prior to fast cooler installation 95 * OAT no load 75 mph sustained interstate driving at about 1000 feet above sea level
I consistently saw 175 degree transmission temps. I saw a peak of 195 degree under same conditions with a 13,000 pound load 5th wheel trailer + tractor on a relatively short steep grade on I70.

Post fast cooler installation I have seen consistent 155 degree transmission temps with a peak of 160 degrees. 90 *OAT
no load 75 mph sustained interstate driving as above. I have not yet pulled a load to compare post fast cooler. It appears that the fast coolers are good for 10 to 20 degrees cooler temps at least initially.
I have kept spread sheet records of trips of temperatures of my differentials, transfer case, transmission and oil temps.
Its too long to post but if you want to e-mail me I'll try to send it to you if you like. I have some mountain driving in Wy, CO, SD as well as flat land interstate loaded and unoaded.

Those temps sound pretty good to me. I just took a look at a couple of oil manufacturer sites to see what the tempurature range specs are on gear oil and couldn't find the information. Amsoil shows a flash point of 403º on their AGR SAE 75W-90 (GL-2 through GL-5), if that helps ya :)

Doc

I have a sixspeed, my highest temp i have seen with air temp around 105, stop and go and highway driving was 190 unloaded.

no fast coolers.

Just finished towing my 6000lb TT 3000 miles and trans temps ran 165 in 80deg temps and never over 180 even last sunday when it was 100deg+ and I was running 75mph with the trailer.
