I drove a 97 5spd 4. 10 geared single cab today. . My brother is interested in a diesel and wanted me to Drive it.

The truck has a dead throttle up until about 1700 rpm and then pulls fine...

I wanted to ask if this was normal for a 215 pump with deep gears or if something else is up?

The clutch doesn't give any indication of slipping. The RPM and wheel speed come up appropriately with respect to one another.

I'm curious if maybe it doesn't have a low rpm fuel problem??

I could just be acustomed to my automatic and not know how to handle myself in a standard cummins.

I think the power is pretty much even with my auto and the stock fuel plate slid. It's just that the 5 spd doesn't want to play at much of any rpm under 2000.

No thats not right. Does it have a large turbo on it? Maybe someone put on an HX40 as a replacement, that would be horrible spool on a stock truck and have no low end response.

This as far as I can tell is a stock truck... . I never looked at the tampers proofs (I should have though) but if it has a power added. . this truck is killed. It really doesn't have more than 200hp IMO.

The AFC is a good call... . I didn't put it together, but I wasn't hearing the turbo up until 1700 or so and that's when it took off...

Is it possible someone turned the AFC the wrong way??? Never heard of that before :)

Right now, I'm just trying to figure out if the truck is worth buying or not. They want too much for it considering the work it needs to make it a nice truck. Mechanically it has some bugs (obviously) But with 35 inch tires and some minor mod work, I think it would be a killer truck.

P. S. I got to thinking about this. I think it has to be the AFC. The pedal can go to the floor with no real power and then when it hits 1700 or so I can "Feel" the pedal. Almost like it becomes more firm... . Maybe the plate contour i'm feeling? I know I have to come back off the floor with it once it spools. Oh well... It's not my truck so I may never know.

Thanks guys.

You can check the travel of the AFC by applying some shop air to it while its off the truck. Dont know if the owner would let you take it all apart to check it out. If the AFC arm isnt moving out of the way, it wont allow the govener to hit the plate. Thats one possibility, Im sure others will come up with some more...

Yeah. . I'm familiar with how it all works... It just hadn't crossed my mind for some reason.

Guy wants $8300 with 211K miles, Brake problems, Engine Problems (I don't think they know any better about this) Hail damages, worn front end and a leaking rear hub seal.

I'd love talking him into letting me fix it, but I don't really know the man. I may drive it again later this week and snoop the engine compartment a little more.

How is the boost refernce line on a 97 run? Is it plastic or metal hardline? If they unhooked the wastegate by chance and thus unhooked the AFC, it may just be riding high enough up the AFC foot to be giving it drivable fuel?? I dunno.
