Engine/Transmission (1994 - 1998) 5 speed transmission fluid?

Hey guys I have to change the transmission fluid in my truck and I was wondering what kind of fluid to use. I got underneath the truck and it says use Castrol Syntorque only is this true or can I use something else? What is the best fluid to use? Thanks Nick.

Castrol Syntorque is the stuff to use, Check this link. Amsoil, Redline and other make Synthetic Oils that may work well too.

Id like to stick with the castrol syntorque. Anybody know where I can get that stuff in Minnesota. Also how much do I need I saw one site said 8. 5 quats another said 4. 5 thanks.

The cheapest and easiest place I found to get the Syntorq is a GM dealer. Same stuff.



I just went to the new Amsoil MTG last night. Maybe a little too early to tell but it seems to shift better than the Syntorq. Also lost a little annoying "whine". Mine took 4 quarts.



If you don't have one, make sure to pick up one of those little oil pumps. I got mine to put lower unit lube in my outboard but it's just the trick to get the new lube in the transmission with no mess.

Like BigPapa said go to a GM dealer. My local Dodge dealer wanted $20 a quart the GM dealer was $12. I believe the quantity is 4. 5 quarts. I'm thinking of going with Redline next change.

I just finished changing my NV4500 oil today. I sucked most of it out through the fill plug then I took off the driver's side PTO cover to let the rest drain out. There was a bit of grey sludge on the magnet on the PTO cover but no big chunks. I cleaned the old silicone gasket off the PTO cover and put a new bead on and bolted it back on. I refilled with 2 quarts of Redline MTL and 2 quarts of Redline MT90. I had a little bit left over so 4 quarts should be plenty for most changes.

I went for a drive when I was done and it shifts better than the old stock fluid. The 5th gear rattle is gone also. Does it shift better than new Syntorque? I can't remember what it felt when it was new but I'm happy with the improvement over the old oil with 60000 miles on it.

Why did I use Redline? I heard some good reports and it was 1/3 the price compared to the local Dodge *******.

My old trans oil was very black? I'm glad I changed it.

I got it from Summit Racing. I used a 50/50 blend of MT90 and MTL, That is what the Tech. Rep. from Redline recommended.

I just disassembled my GM NV4500 transmission along with a Dodge trans. for my conversion. The Redline fluid looked like new. I will definitely use it for my conversion.

Several years ago I reported dyno horsepower drag-down tests on different lubes. syntorq was the lowest drag.
