I installed a #11 plate and the AFC kit now when I hook up my 5th wheel I can slip the clutch at will so I guess it is time for a new one.

The question is 5th gear nut. While I am having the clutch installed is the 5th gear enough of a problem to have it done at the same time.

Thanks to all

Yes the 5th gear nut is enough of a problem to deal with it when convenient. If possible the best fix is a new mainshaft that is fully splined and this seems to be the only "sure cure". There is nothing from DC that works with out fail. When I repaired my 5th gear nut problem there wasnt enough money for a new shaft so after the new nut was torqued I used a BIIG hammer and big center punch and went around the nut staking the nut to the shaft about 10-12 times. This technique was pioneered by another member who tows a whole bunch of miles a year and it has held up pretty good for him. I have some pics of the staking operation if needed so PM me with your e mail address and I will send them.

Personally, I havent had a problem. Yanking the gearbox isnt a big deal. I vote fixing it when it breaks. You really shouldnt suffer a failure if you dont lug a load in 5th.

I think I was about 55k miles when mine went. I'm @ 90k now & have been towing occasionally & it hasn't gone. Looking forward to getting the fully splined shaft put in next month before it happens again. It's not "if", it's "when".
