Has anybody here ever heard of a 5 speed transmission getting to much torque. I think mine has gotten to much and has twisted itself at the fifth gear cover and developed a leak. It started out as a discolorization of the case now is a constant drip and blow back to everything behind it. All I know what to do is pull it, split the transmission and start again. This is a rebuild from ST in Texas, so it has been apart before.

Any ideas?

Leaking Rear Seal

I can't comment on the torque issue. I have seen rear shaft seals go bad, though.

Preston, I've seen it. Just got done yesterday replacing my 5 speed. Fifth gear simply gave up, while passing two cars , it cracked the cover of the overdrive unit. The teeth inside the countershaft syncro clutch sheared off. I've had other 5 speed failures, both on Will's truck, and on mine. Yes you can have too much torque!

Pres, call Will if you need to, we'll help you however we can. I'm sure you know how to work on it, though.

Isn't the 5 speed rated for just 475 ft, lbs. , and the 6 speed for 550 ft. lbs. ?

The ratings are something like that and to me that says rhat there are a lot of trucks running around with transmissions that really aren't up to the job they're given.

Thanks Tom. I'll call Will and see. Did you ever get the short shift for the 5 gear transmission? If so we just might work on that. Let you just change the whole box.

KRS... . Yeah that's what they say but my understanding is that's the gear tolerance and not the case spliting. If that's the case limit we really have a problem.

Oh well. I'll wait on Tom and see what next.
