I carried my truck into the dealer today for the occasional engine knocking problem.

Dealer had 4 other trucks in today with same problem. He checked TSBs and Star Tech and did not find any listed problems similar to mine.

Scenario: I crank the truck up, drive it 7 miles, turn engine off for 5-10 minutes, crank back up and under a load, either Drive or Reverse, and the engine knocks from 800-1000 RPM. The knock will quit after RPM exceeds 1000 RPM. Slow down, engine will knock again.

One truck today was a 6 speed, mine is an Auto.

I hope someone finds a solution. Knock is not only loud but also embarrasing to me for a NEW truck with 5,000 miles.

Service manager is investigating. Told me to drive the truck - didn't appear to be a serious problem. My next truck may not be a Dodge. The hammering knocking noise sucks!

There have been some post's in the past regarding bad injectors causing knock. Seems like it was mostly the no. 1 cyl for some reason if I remember rite.

Good luck,

Scotty

two trucks at my dealership was a loose injector holddown

It was a very sickening knock... tell them to tighten all injectors...

My tech found it by shutting down each injector one at a time

This comes and goes on my truck. Frankly, I ignore it. I probably have a loose injector hold down (as others have reported).

My knock proved to be the # 1 cyl. injector. Road tested with dealer computer hooked up-- Shut off #1 and no clatter/"knock".

Shut off 2 through 6 and knock remained in the rpm range, mentioned by other posters, and we experienced a loss in power.

DC approved the replacement of the injector( this is a controled procedure and required the road test) and my truck has run perfectly since with a 2mpg increase. Empty @ 72 mph. yields 19. 2/19. 4 with cruise. Speed rolls about 2mph when I hit hill tpos. Also, I'm running 285 BFG'S and have recalibrated the speedo---

My 373 has become about 360. Pulling my toy box yields about 15. 8 to 16. 9 depending on speed between 70/78.

exactly what rpm was this knock heard at?

I think my knocks at low speed like from a stop, and at idle, at idle the knock is a little less harsh... At what speed/rpm did they test and turn off an injector?

Thanks

Anyone with pictures of the injector hold down that needs to be tightened according to preceding posts?

Do the valve covers need to be removed?

I personally would never ignore a knock. My 03 did infact have a bad #1 injector, and yes it sounded like $#!#. My main concern was that it might wash down a cylinder(sp). On a brand new truck I would not take a chance. Took two times before they figured it out. It took three days to get one flown in from Wisconsin so they gave me a loaner car to drive.

I've got 27k on mine and there is a slight knock but every diesel I've heard seems to have one cylinder more pronounced than the others. I haven't heard one with a loud knock yet. The cost of fuel system components in the new diesels causes me some concern with any diesel. If the new 3rd gen Cummins turns out to be a bank vacuum waiting to happen, my next truck might be an F250 V-10 or Dodge 2500 Hemi. But definately not a PSD or Duramax.

Yes, good luck getting that fixed. I've been really lucky so far - no engine problems outside of gelled fuel one morning when it got really cold.

My '03 knocked when it hit about 4 k miles and lasted until it got to about 10 k. Does not do it anymore at all, never had time to take it to the dealer. I figured if the engine blew, it still had the 100 k warranty. The idle does lope a bit though now and the turbo whistles real good when ambient outdoor is <35 DEGF.

My service manager will not try to fix the loud knock in my engine because he can't find a reference to the problem in Star Tech.

Who can provide me a picture of the Injector Hold Down, and I will check the tightness myself?

Thanks
