Engine/Transmission (1994 - 1998) 5" vs 4" exhaust

Ive read alot of threads on here about the exhaust systems and comparisons and from what Ive read there can be a loss of low end torque with a 5" system



my question is at what point is the 5" exhaust beneficial over the 4"





I have a 97 reg cab, stick, 215 pump etc...

There should be no loss of power/Tq on a turbo diesel engine by upsizing the exhaust. You want the exhaut gasses to be able to have the least amount of restriction leaving the turbo, expext lower EGT's as a result. A 4" on you rig will do the job very well, a 5" would be over kill unless you are looking for a deeper sound.

As mentioned, 4" will work fine for most applications. You start to run out of 4" capability around 750rwhp.

i have (had) a 5inch. i would not do it again. it looks good but ther is no need for it. i goes from 3inch to 5inch if you have a factory turbo and 4inch to 5 inch if you have a aftermarket one. also the spare tire did not fit with the 5 inch either.

Never had a spare tire fit problem with the 5" on my 2001 shortbed 2wd. It was a system I put together with pieces with some help from Rip because no one was making 5" systems yet. With large 5" muffler it was pretty quiet in the cab, minimal drone. Couple if vids if you want to hear it

Vaughn is correct if you have stock size tires you should be fine.
