It's realy neat when you can hear that big heavy slug cutting wind on it's way down range. When shooting out to 500-600 yards at a 4' dia. steel gong you have plenty of time to set your rifle down and then hear the ring.

A 45- what??

No. Never heard of one ;)

PM me for details as to how many I have... ..... er, I mean how many I have not heard of :-laf

Thats a good question... ... ... ... ..... Does the movie ever really tell us? It's a sharps, so it would have to be limited to something chambered for the 45 or 50 cal, right. In the movie, he says it's something of an experimental cartridge. I know he says what it is but does he say it's a 50 or 45 cal ??????????????

What did the Sharps chamber back in the 1800's I'm sure it was a number of calibers. All the new repoductions I see at the local gun dealer are chambered . 45/70 These guns have really caught on. To whom I don't yet know, as I have yet to see someone buy one. They are $1,400 to $2,000 plus. Not worth it for a reproduction and single shot to boot.

BTW the local gun dealer is now selling that five shot pistol... you guessed it. In . 45/70

Does this make Dirty Harry's gun look like a childs toy?

FWIW I bought my first . 45/70 when I was in eighth grade. I wanted something with a little more bite than a Marlin 39M . 22cal lever gun.

i think the rigle in Quigley was a . 45, not sure on the other number though. Tom Selleck does a great job in getting authentic and unique guns for his movies.

I guess I will have to dig out the Quigley DVD this afternoon and see what I can find out. Right now, though, it is bed time. Just finished my third 12 hr night shift. Couldn't stay awake to watch Quigley if I wanted to. Now that is tired. If I find out anything I will let y'all know later.

Here is the scoop on Quigley's rifle from the DVD. The scene is when he first gets to Marston's ranch, right before he shoots the bucket.

Marston: "Aaahh, the legendary Sharps. "

Quigley: "You know your weapons. It's a lever action breech loader, usual barrel length is 30 inches, this one has an extra 4. It's converted to use a special . 45 caliber 110 grain metal cartridge with a 540 grain paper patch bullet. Fitted with double set triggers, and a vernier sight. It's marked up to 1200 yards. This one shoots a might further. "

Marston: "An experimental weapon, with experimental ammunition. "

Quigley: "You could call it that. "

Later when he is talking with the shopkeeper about reloads, he says you can substitute a . 450 #2 British musket lead.

A 45/110 then as compared to the more popular 45/70 or a 45/90

With a 540 gr bullet?? Hummmm I dunno if that thing would have much accuracy up to and beyond 1200 yards... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... ...

Can a Weatherby . 460 shoot a 500 gr bullet with accuracy up to and beyond 1200 yards?????

Well, I for one aint gonna try it :)

The secret is the black powder, extremely low velocity standard deviations shot to shot, while SD doesn't matter as much at close range, when you get way out there shot to shot uniformity seems to seperate the men from the boys.

(Not an expert, just repeating what I've heard, and it makes sense to me. )

I worked up a load for my . 300 win once with H450 and it had an extreme spread of 9FPS for ten shots. It wasn't very accurate at 100 yds only about 2" groups, hard to say what it did at 4-5 hundred. The funny thing is it would hang fire for a fraction of a second, I went to a Fed 215 primer and the extreme spread jumped to 60 FPS. I never did go back and try to finesse the load.
