Does anybody know if the 2004. 5 Cummins engine is 50 state certified. I have been told it is true. If so where can I get this information.

It is 50 state certified, but you must buy one with the CA emissions sticker to be able to register it in CA. If that makes sense to anyone, you are much smarter than I am.

You only need the sticker if the vehicle is under 7500 miles. Other then that you can register it in cali with out the smog test,At least I hope so since I just bought a used truck with 25,000 miles on it from a private party in Oregon.

First off, if it's under 7500 miles it's going to have to have this CARB designation on the valve cover. Second, there is no Smog check. If it's over 7500 miles, it doesn't need the CARB designation. Just bring it into the state and make your appointment with the antichrist (DMV) and get raped for fees.

On my sticker there is nothing in the carb column but those numbers are in the column next to it under the EPA column. The numbers are the same.

This is a new reply to an old post...

Purchased an '05 (new) CTD in MN and had it registered today at the CA DMV.

I noticed on the paperwork the examiner (for verification) checked the box indicating that 'Vehicle meets US EPA standards only"...

I'm not sure what the ramifications of this are, but I'm expecting the worst.

Any guesses? I have to return to the DMV next week to have the paperwork completed.

how many miles are on it? did he note the mileage? Why didn't you finish the process? Worse case senario, they'll tell you to remove the vehicle from the state. Good luck to you. John

It works like this in California, All diesel trucks are smog legal, You must have 7500 miles on your truck to license and register if bought out of state used, If the truck has a cal on the sticker on the side of the engine valve cover it's legal if bought new out of state and you can have 0 miles on the speedo, If you don't have any of these I would put milage on the truck or register it out of state untill I hit 7500 mile's. I would not even think of going back to DMV if my truck did'nt have any of the above just so I would'nt be blacklisted at DMV.

I've got 2590 miles on it. I basically drove it from MN to CA, then a few trips here and there.

If I get hassled by the DMV over this, and they want to license illegals, I'm gonna be ****** big time. One should see all the expired tags on license plates in this state.

Not familiar with current conditions, but when asking at Dodge dealers in Texas and New York if buying a New Dodge Cummins ( a few years ago ) from them, explaining that I was a resident of California, I was told that they could get me a certified California model at their dealership with no problem at all, that's about five years ago. Perhaps conditions are different now. Scrum Down

Thanks for the input. I'm going to do some checking around today and I'll let you folks know what I find out. Enjoy the day!

After doing some checking it's becoming painfully obvious that it's going to be a 'money game'... it always is isn't it?

I spoke with a CARB person who said that it absolutely, positively CAN'T be registered in California. Show me the money...

John - if the mileage is not documented by the commie DMV - buy a used guage cluster with more that 7. 5K - install it and have them approve it.

It's already been documented on paperwork- a good thought though!

As mentioned, I return to DMV on Tuesday. I'll decide then what to do based on their decision. Two can play that game...

I remember the vegas guy that went throught it... bad ending , I'm pretty sure.

It's worth it to get the Out-of-state dr license, register it OOS, put the miles on it, and then retransplant and register here. Once the VIN is in the book, it's bad news.

I always wondered what would happen if you took it OOS, sold it to so regular schmoe, and then he came here a year later to find the VIN blacklisted? The whole deal makes no sense.

If you read the CARB rules regarding registering out-of-state vehicles, none of it makes sense.

It would not surprise me if some geeks from the DMV come out here to see what's going on- call it paranoia if you will... but I'd bet I'm correct in that assumption.

I've got a nice fire going on the patio, there's a full moon, and I'm going back outside!
