I recently ran across a replacement 50w halogen back up lamp bulb with a 3156/3157 base and thought I would post what I found. .

I gave them a try even knowing I will still add another set of lamps back there.

I found them on eBay for a good price and they come with a lifetime warranty.

They are made by Design Tech and distributed by Hoppy, a leading headlamp aimer manufacture.

Probably a good swap out for people with 3156 bulbs as those are a single filament but the 3157’s in my 05 Ram and wife’s 03 PT Cruiser are a twin element and do well for a non halogen bulb.

The new 50w halogens are brighter but not by a big margin and should they ever burn out I will most likely put the 3157’s back in even though they have a lifetime warranty since shipping costs would be involved.

I installed only one inside the garage, turned out the lights and covered each side for a comparison of light output before doing the other bulb.

i am happy for now with my H3 55w backup lamps... however, when one decides to burn, the lamps will getting either 100w or 120w h3 lamps. .

my stock backup lamp location is now my amber colored turn signals, and both red spots above the stock backup lamps are now brake lamps.
Not a bad idea, seems I remember reading about that some time ago. Must have been you! Did you simply use 3157A amber bulbs and swap wires around in the back for that?

What back up lamps are you using that take H3's?

yep. . 3157a [i think???] amber bulb and cut & spliced the turn signal and backup lamp wires. tee'd the original turn signal wire into the brake lamp wire feed and the backup lamp wire into the turn signal wire feed. the backup wire feed one is taped off and tucked away [backup lamps not tied into/monitored by lamp out circuit] and other side one is controling relay.

the lights are some cheap parts house off road driving lights and they take an h3 bulb [or so the box says] so when one pop's, the 100w's go in [my circuit is good to take 300w load total between the 2 lamps]
