Bill,

I did a lot of research on the small quads before I bought my youngest one. I got him the Suzuki LT 80. It was at the time rated as the safest platform available in that size. We're loading 'em up in the morning and going riding in one of the national forests here. I think the Polaris 50cc & 90cc have made improvements since I bought this one, and I would'nt hesitate looking at one of those. I have 2 Polaris, a 2002 400 and a 2004 500 HO, both are great. we have had the Suzuki over a year & no problems so far. Just keep the oil checked and the chain lubed. Hope you find what you want, & good riding. Olen.

First ATV

You get what you pay for. Buy cheap-get cheap.

I have been riding ATVs since 1990. These off name brands start off looking and running good, but they just don't last. As soon as your kids get comfortable-you will know this because they will scare the heck out of you-jumping, donuts, wheelies, and crashes-the off name brands will be garbage. When your kids grow out of them, there is No resale value.

My recommendation for a first ATV-a used Honda 90. Bullit proof. We ride with a family that has one-1996 I think-it keeps on going like a timex. The only thing they have done is change the oil/filters. Still has the same spark plug. 4 different kids shared it through a serveral weekends in Coos Bay Oregon. No problems.

Each to his own- But Honda builds the best quality longest lasting ATVs. Look at how many of those Honda mini trail 50s are still out there and going. That was my first bike. My brother and I rode the heck out of it for 4 years.

Oil changes only.

Pay now or pay later.

I'll second what he said. You just cant beat a Honda, or you can beat a Honda and they'll put up with it, and when it's time to sell people still pay top $$$ for used Hondas. ;)

I'll second with ICEMAN, some friends of ours bought there six year old a ETon and it has been a bulletproof machine. I still have some time my sons 1 3/4 years old, but I'll most likely go with an ETon.

Check some of the atv forums and magazines to see what people have experienced. Most that I saw favored the Polaris, and so did I. I looked at most of the brands and decided to buy the Polaris Predator 50. I picked up an '04 two weeks ago for $1599 (comes with a youth helmet and whip flag). It's only had one tank ran through, but seems to run really well. It has two limiters to keep the kids in check (throttle screw and cdi rev limiter), but plenty of power on tap when they're ready. I actually was leaning toward the Yamaha Raptor 50 because of the 4-stroke engine and shaft drive, but it seems like everyone who owns one is complaining about the total lack of power. The Polaris looks really cool for the kids, seems very stable and safe, there are several dealerships around if parts are ever needed, and has aftermarket performance parts available if racing may be in the future.

We, also, bought an '04 Predator 50 for our kids, 5 1/2 and 8 1/2. Nice quad, easy to ride; however, it has its limitations. It's limited to 15 mph, which is nice when they're learning. It'll tote me around at 185 lbs, which looks like a monkey bleeping a football, but it pulls me up the ramp of our hauler no problem. I'm wishing I would have gone with the Predator 90 now; however, they wouldn't sell it to us because our kids were under 12 yoa.

I feel the same way as the others that mentioned, "You get what you pay for. " Cheap looks good on the price tag, but always seems to cost you more in the end. If you go with any of the big 5, Polaris, Honda, Suzuki, Kawasaki or Yamaha, I think you'll be fine.

I don't have anything against any of the other brands. Just my personal experience. I have a friend who has one the 60 or 70cc E-Ton machines that tows their 1050lb. Quarter Scale pulling tractors around in doubles and even triples, and it handles it fine allthough slightly underpowered for the job. Definately tough machines.

The Polaris 50's and 90's have been "toughened" compared to the other Korean and Taiwanese imports. There was special attention paid to durability and safety during development. The 15mph limit is a regulation for kid's atvs. Be careful of any Chinese imports at this time. If they are anything like their mini-dirt bikes, the reliability may be suspect.

honestly though,,i am definately a "brand" name buyer but after looking at the eton i decided it would make a great starter bike for my boy. if i had seen any craftmanship that didn't look right i wouldn't be letting my kids near it.

when it comes time for him to get into a full size atv it will definately be one of the major brand names(honda, yamaha, polaris etc. ).

here's a little info from the E-TON website

ETON Worldwide

Manufacturer and supplier, Ji-ee, parent company of E-TON, is a key supplier to major companies in the automotive and motorcycle industry. Ji-ee specializes in manufacturing engine components and assemblies for some of the world's largest vehicle sellers such as: Honda, Yamaha, Mazda, Nissan, Mitsubishi, Isuzu, Renault, Cummins, and Hyster.

looks like e-ton supplies parts for honda

and CUMMINS :--)

Suzuki Quadmaster 50. They run 1799 locally brand new, and you can generally sell them used for 1300 to 1400. Very easy to start, nice governing system (Exhaust and throttle limiters) and a little tether on the back for "dad to follow behind... "

My buddy had one of these, and it was sweet. I could ride wheelies on it!

I would lean towards the Honda like some of the guys said. I bought a 90 Scrambler for my son 2 years ago and its a 2001 model and have begun to have problems with it. This thing has never sat outside and I had begun to have problems with stalling and finally starting. Seemed to be an ignition problem and starter relay problems simultaniously. After tearing the body work off of it I found the ignition switch terminals rotted off at each connection. This quad has never been out of the yard or sat out in the rain. Poor technique used in the manufacturing process, The signs of a cold solder joint much like television assembly. I'm now waiting for the 25 dollar switch assembly. Also, the body mounts are all cracked off at the mounting points, they're just not thick enough for the machine. Just for info, Polaris doesn't manufacture the 90 or 50 models either, E-ton does for them. My 450S foreman thet I bought in April is ten times the quality my '95 400 Explorer was. My Valkyrie is second to none in quality. Just my opinion but I've worked on alot of things through the years andfound what works the hard way.

E-Ton!!!

I would say definitley go with the E-ton. I have 2 of the 50cc models (i think they are called a lightning) for pit quads. one of the guys on our team is about 6'5" and probably 240 or so and he rides it around all day. My and one of my other buddies used to take both of the E-tons to our local riding spot and show up all the people who thought they could do wheelies on their banshees and stuff. When you weigh more than the fourwheeler, its easy to balance!! my point being, we've beat the snot out of these under situations not intended and have only had two failures. both times, it was the oil injection resevoir coming loose and melting. It was our fault however, we didnt have all the bolts in place!! :-laf

My son will be 4 on his birthday and has been asking for a motorcycle. I have been trying to change this to a fourwheeler. The E-Ton looks good! Its too bad Honda's smallest is a 90. :( I still have my first, a 1969 mini trail that runs like a top, and several others. I like the idea of the remote kill switch. He gets a little wild sometimes. (I wonder who he got that from). I am going to look at the E-Ton and the Kazuma. I think Honda, Yamaha, and Suzuki have got some competition in this market. This might become one of my favorite threads on TDR! :-laf

I went and looked at the Suzuki/Kawasaki 50cc 4 wheeler and was not impressed. It is a joint venture. The Polaris/Artic cat is made be Eton. I want to see the 40cc by Eton. Today I went and looked at the Kazuma 50cc. It actually looked good. Especially for the price. $675 Oh well more shopping ahead.

Just Bought A Used Suzuki Quadmaster 50cc For My Son(2 Y. o) Dont Call Cps Please! We Ride It Together And It Is Perfect Because Of The Size(very Small And Easy To Govern) I Got This With A Green Sticker From Private Party For $1200. someone Is Selling One On Tdr Classifieds Out Of Oakdale, Ca. This Has A Red Sticker And Is An 03,good Luck!

bike!

Sorry, this is a little off topic, but Get him a bike if he wants one! I grew up riding motorcycles instead. I always wanted a fourwheeler. I had a 3-wheeler when I was 18 mos. old, got my first bike at 2. 5 (50cc italia-jet), my second bike at 5 (80cc yamaha) and a four wheeler when I was 7(polaris 250 cyclone). Man I hated the four wheeler! I went back to bikes and have had them ever since. I still have the polaris, but now the motor/trans/swingarm is in a golfcart because the four wheeler never got ridden. Just my opinion on the two.
