I curious about the use of a biocide (Power Service makes one).

I have about 50K on the truck in a year. No fuel problems on a stock truck.

When would I want to use a biocide? Regular intervals or only when one has fuel problems?

Would using a biocide without specific problems cause me other types of problems? Like maybe shorter fuel filter life, seals, hoses, etc. ?

Thanks,

Chris

I don't think I would bother with the amount of miles you put on in a year. Fungus growing in a fuel tank is normally a problem if the fuel sits for a while. When I was running a fish boat we had to dose the fuel because it would sit for some time in the off season. When we bought the boat it had a real problem because it had sat for several months without a biocide. Looked like snot in the fuel. When we killed it with a biocide we still had a problem. The snot was dead but it was still there. LOTS of filters later it was cleaned up.

You might consider using it every 6 months as a preventive measure. Steve StL had a very bad experience with bugs in his tank. I wonder if he'll chime in and say what he does.

I would agree with Joe that it isn't nearly as important in a truck as it is in a boat, but it won't hurt to add biocide once in a while.

I have a 550 tank in my back yard. I was going to buy some biocide just as a PM measure.

The shop that was selling the stuff told me that if I dont have rotten fuel, dont use it.

It was pretty expensive, so they had nothing to gain by telling me this.

Biocide?

My understanding is that stuff cant grow in the fuel anyway. It can only grow in the water that's in the fuel. If that's true, can't we just keep the tank free af water by draining the fuel filter regularly and on occasion add a fuel dryer like alcohol?
