Can you change the output shaft on a 2wd 518 trans to work on a 4x4 with out tearing the whole transmission apart?

You have to take the trans apart to replace the output shaft.

You just need an OD for the 4x4. The output shaft is part of the OD unit and can be removed without tearing down the main transmission. Drop the existing OD and find somebody to build you one for a 4x4.
