518 auto transmission fluid change questions

Actually installing a B&M deep trans pan/drain plug. Installing temp. sender in new pan as well. 88k miles on truck,about 40k miles since prev. change. Full synthetic change to come.



No abnormal shifting or other mentionables. Normal sediment in pan and on magnet IMO.



Is it recommended to re-adjust clutch bands or seeing as operation is, or what appears to be normal warranted?(leave it alone if it aint broke)? If so, what are specs?



Re-torque valve body bolts? specs?(will be getting a manual soon. )



Opinions on location of sender location in new pan?

Opening the holy grail 'er Factory Service Manual



Valve body attaching screws 100 in. lbs



Be happy to post the steps to adjust the Front and rear band if you need it.



Some one with an aftermarket pan will have to post where the temp sensor is located. Does it really matter (?)

In the side off the bottom a bit I suppose.

I have some of the info. Back-off the adjusting screws,both front and rear bands, torque both to 72 "#'s,then the amount that the two adjusting screws have to be backed off is the info that I do not have in # of turns. (Haynes repair manual without diesel application)



Correct my info if it is wrong,& add the missing info if you have

it.

Front band adjustment. After you have the 72 inch pound of torque. Back off the adjusting screw 2 1/2 turns



Rear band adjustment. After you have the 72 inch pound torque setting. Back the adjuster screw out two turns.

Al - Keep an eye on eBay. I picked up a used FSM (around $30, IIRC). I saw a couple on there recently. If I come across them again I'll post a link for you.

They have them on CD or book form, $55 I think but to ship the book to me from a town just north of me where they are located was like $30 bux or so yah, it's a very large manual, but still... ... this is the Co. that prints Dodge/Chrysler books.

Buy the 93 FSM, same info as previous years, only manual with getrag 5 speed rebuild info, in case you ever get a 5speed. I have one, and you see what year my trucks are. Bill

Anybody familiar with a service manual on disc?

I bought one before I found a printed manual. It has the same info, just in a different format. Of the two I'd rather have the printed manual - it's easier to take to the truck than the computer - but you can always print out certain sections for convenience.

That is what my take was on using the disc. And if you get grease on the specific page that you are working off of, and cant read it anymore, just print another.



I think what would work easier-better, if lets say that you are working under the hood and referencing out of a manual (and im sure there are others that can attest to this) the manual never seems to want to stay in a position where you can look at it and look at what you are working on at a glance without closing up and or falling.



I think what would work good with printable sheets would be to use a couple of magnetic clip-holders clipped wherever you are working.

Is the disk in Word format? or Adobe PDF? What I'm getting at is, can a search be run for a particular word or phrase?

It's in PDF format. I'm pretty sure you can search for specific stuff - never tried it but Adobe does have a "find" tool that works pretty well.
