had a look at my old 98 i sold to a buddy of mine the other day. hes got over 350,000km, EZ , 275 injectors,K&N, straight pipe and NO GAUGES. he tows heavy and hauls 2 sleds on a deck regularly  and its still running strong,

you can look at the lower/rear passenger side of the block and tell if it's gonna be a cracker or not. many 53's did not have the cracking problem

Did I miss something? I guess I wasn't awake in that class.
Which 53's don't have the cracking problem

Please elaborate.

Thanks.

Piers posted pics of the good and bad 53's, there's a visible casting flaw in the bad ones. probably hard to see w/ an automatic, the transmission cooler might be blocking it.

there's a thread on here somewhere w/ the pics in it

I'm not sure that good/bad #53 casting idea is necessarily correct. After that post last year, a fellow TDR member and I spent a Saturday afternoon comparing the castings on our particular trucks and one other that was with us that day. From the info that thread referenced, we determined that we both had the "good" block castings. His promptly cracked on the dyno not too long after that. Now it is perfectly feasible that we mistakenly identified the blocks as the "good casting", but I don't thinks so.
