Here’s a picture of the neighbors 53 block crack the weld they had done didn’t hold so the they tried some jb weld which is currently holding . The crack is way worse than mine and is almost the entire length of the block

I think we did 2 or maybe 3 back in the mid/late 2000's. None of them lasted and we ended up replacing blocks in short order.

My son in laws 01 has no numbers on the block. My sons 01 is a 55 block

Thats what you want 55 is good no numbers is. Better you checked both sides of the block corect ?

I talked to a friend today and he has a non 53 block for sale . he's also rebuilding an engine for another guy with a cracked a 53 block so that is 3 # 53 blocks in the last couple weeks in this area

I'd think the following would be a given, but sometimes I think too much and then not enough....

As far as welding cast (and I'm not an expert welder, but I am a master grinder...) I learned from an old welder who used to work at US Steel and repair/rebuild cars as a hobby and side business that if you plan to weld a crack, especially in cast you need to identify the start and stop points of the crack, go about 1/8th" or so beyond these points and drill a hole to give the crack "no where else to go". V-groove the entire length of the crack, heat the area till cherry red and then weld, fill the holes first and then the v-groove. Don't quench or try to cool at all = not even compressed air, allow it to naturally cool, grind, smooth, flatten weld (after it completely cools) and inspect for fopahs.

I was looking at buying a 24v and have a few questions about 53 blocks, first off where is the number cast on the block at? what years where they made? and did they use them for industrial motors? the one im looking at is from a Freightliner FL70

I too am interested, not that I want to find my block cracked but it would be nice to know what I have.

Check out the TDR Buyers Guide for All Years, page 252 has a very good article on the 53 blocks.

In general that is a very good document along with "the perfect collection".

Its on the drivers side of the block below the injection pump area.

As far as industrial use, I guess they could be, but from what I have read on other posts most other applications use a different mounting support set up. Above on this post I had a link I found with some good info on the lock-n-stitch web site.

Also you can search "53 block" or "53 and Block", leave off the quotes, the "and" gives you results with both words. I find adding the "and" comes up with different results at times.

The 53 can be on either side of the block mine is on the passenger side
