Engine/Transmission (1998.5 - 2002) 53 block questions

I have read so much about the 53 block, ones with major troubles and some survivors. I am going to look at a '98 tomorrow. I understand this is the year of the change from 12 valve to 24 valve. Is the 53 block found in the 12 valve engines? Or is it only in the 24 valves? Is it found as early as '98?
