54,000 possbile u joint

When i let the clutch out and start to go i am hearing a squeek squeek. Drove 23 miles home today then checked to see if the area was warm in temp. (no warmth). I then crawled underneathe too look and feel around to find a clue. I found an o ring that has a little bulge coming from the rear shaft. I dont know if this is the culprit. I put grease in that area to see if it would dissapear but it didnt. So now im back to square one. I dont have any vibration. Can you help me

I did some more poking around and it sounds like its coming from the carrier bearing. Guess ill have to take off the driveshaft so i can really get a better look. While its off im gonna check my u joints. How many of you recommend the greasable ones from precision.

Didn't your vehicle come with a 7/70 warranty? If so, the dealer should repair it at no charge. It should be covered under the drivetrain warranty.

A buddy of mine has a short bed 6 speed 4x4 and he just lost his rear U joint and he has the one piece driveshaft.



The Precisions work great and are greasable.

Yes the 7/70 will cover it but you will be back in the same boat when that el junko non greasable joint fails.



The 6 speeds get the 351 precisions be it 1 piece or 2 piece driveshaft.

I had the same problem at 45000. It was a u-joint. It takes a 5-188x for the rear drive shaft. They also have grease fitting. If you go to the dealer for warr. they will only replace the bad one (no fitting ). The deductable is more than the parts.

Yep, go get the aftermarket parts!! My shop used Neapco 3-0188... (Spicer 5-188x) joints and said these ones are the best for our trucks!!

That's what I thought when I took mine in. When they called and said it was fixed they informed me that there was a $100 deductable. I read the warranty and sure enough, after 50k miles there is a $100 deductable on the drivetrain. So I had to pay $100 and go without my truck for 4 days for a part that I could have gotten for $25 and replaced in 1 hr. Some warranty, Huh ?

I lost a u-joint at 30,000 miles. I lost the use of my truck for three days, and the dealer only replaced the failed joint. When I got it back, I could feel the driveshaft still wasn't right.



I felt like one of the remaining joints was going to go so I just bought three Precision 351's from rockauto for $60 including shipping. I ordered the parts at 7 PM on Thursday, and had them in hand on Saturday morning. My local parts store wanted $37. 76 a piece. I'm sure these will be much better than the OEM crap.

Bad joints

Just replaced all three rear joints with Precision 351's. 2003 with 59000 miles on it, first joint went at 30000, dealer replaced it. Had dealer scheduled to replace it again, but after reading thread replaced them myself. All take off shudder gone, thanks for the advise.

Well i replaced the two in the rear with precision 351 greasables. The one located at the diff was pretty burnt. I'm gonna work on changing the front shafts here soon and the u joints at the wheels.
