I would like to say that all of you guys rock, I have looked over this site for about two years now and have learned tons of great info. I'm just so glad there is a place like this where people can get help and discuss things, and have knowledgeable answers. Enough of the fluff, I have a 6 speed 5600 and when i let the clutch out in 2nd with no load I hear a rattle or a chatter from the engine compartment, it does not do it if you are sitting still with the parking break on and I let the clutch out a ways. to easily recreate the situation if I coast in 2nd letting it idle and I press the brake pedal a little bit it chatters and sounds just like it does when i start out, does this sound normal or do you guys think I might ahve a clutch or driveline issue?

It sounds like you have something not properly bolted down. A cummins and a 5600 combo always takes off smoothly and quietly even without giving it any diesel juice. It has a governor that keeps idle rpm constant.

Sounds like normal gear "crunch" to me. Does it do it if you take off in 1st? I can get mine to do it if i'm too lazy to downshift around a corner and keep it in 4th and hit the go-go pedal too quickly. My PMCR will let me do that ! :D

There is a TSB for the idle clutch rattle for the 2003s. Might want to look into it. You can look up some TSB under the website features in the forum.

My trans rattles at 1000-1400 rpms if I'm running one gear too low. It also happens on take-off.

Now I've accepted that that is the way our bullet-proof trannies sound. I just try not to lug it. It is basically impossible to avoid the noise while cruising around parking lots.

You don't say what year your truck is. As was mentioned, there was a TSB for earlier 3rd gens, because the springs in the clutch were weak causing rattle. I don't think it was a problem that would cause any failure, though. All big-rigs have the noise (this ain't no Honda!).

Do you have an EZ or any other box on the truck? With an EZ my truck did not take of smooth and rattled and felt like I really needed to hit the go pedal to keep from stalling. With no boxes however everything is very smooth.

Sorry about the lack of truck information just getting started with it all, but it will do it in 1st and 2nd for sure, when i start in 3rd it is fine, when I am letting out the clutch it is fine but as soon as I have the cluth pedal all the way out and little or no throttle is added it will do the chattering. I have not been able to check the exhaust hanger yet.

I had a lot of noise coming from mine about two weeks ago, as I'd let off the gas it would chatter and sounded really bad slowing down with no load on it. I investigated and found the Universial joint was going out. I paid $130 for a new one and must say it was well worth it. Just crawl up under your truck and move your drive line back and fourth and see if it's lose anywhere. Goodluck
