Hi guys,

Went to work today and lost 3rd and 4th gear. I need to put in a new transmission or get this one rebuilt. I was thinking about a 6spd. I know it has been done and I know there are posts in here about it, but I am not coming up with anything when I search. If anybody knows where they are would you please post a link. If you have done this conversion, what do you think? Thanks!

i lost 3rd and 4th in mine a while back. what happened was the mainshaft snapped. right where 3rd and 4th are on the shaft there is a transition on the shaft it is the narrowest point actually. mine twisted off perfectly smooth. all the other gears worked, and when i opened it from the top it looked fine even. if you look at my reader rig deal it has pictures so you can see. its not that big of a deal to rebuild these things. not all that expensive either. i too thought about switching to a 6 speed. the trannies are spendy and you have to have your front drive shaft lengthened a foot and the rear shortened along with the rest of the gettin it in there. the same guy at quad sells an extreme duty mainshaft. if i remember right it was just under 1k to get the master rebuild kit including the mainshaft w/ updated 5th gear from Dan. i am not a mechanic and i have rebuilt the top and bottom half of this transmission in a hobby shop on the base. its not as hard as you would think.

take a look at the pictures. can you, without using the clutch, put it in 3rd and 4th while its running? cause of the way its all held in there with 4th gear on the input shaft everything will pretty much stay in place if it breaks off right there. good luck to ya. any questions let me know i will try and answer them.

I'am not sure I want to deal with changing my driveshaft lengths but there is a place close by to do it. I am calling Quad 4x4 after this. NBowlin did it take any special tools to change that shaft out? Did you install the master rebuild kit? Thank you for your quik responses.

as far as special tools go they come with the master rebuild kit. it is a very complete kit from looking at it. i didnt buy it i bought the mainshaft because there was no damage to anything else. got lucky. i have since then replaced pretty much everything because my counter shaft(bottom shaft) had some teeth sheer off. i changed all the seals and bearings at that time along with third gear and all its components.

the fifth gear nut is a bugger, but if you get a new one you can spare yourself from buying the special socket, which is rediculously expensive, and use a pipe wrench. then to put it on you can use a small spanner wrench and a cheater pipe. its not exact but it one there heck a tight like they ask for. i bought a manual from standard transmission, and was able to do it with that. i have never touched a transmission before this one, so its not hard. i am pretty sure quad had a video even of how to do this.

any more questions just ask. its all still fresh in my mind and i can look it up in the book if i need to. good luck to ya.

i forgot, you only need the special nut socket if you rebuild it on the bench you can just put it in 2 gears at the same time and you will be able to torque it.
