I might be overly cautious, but I think I'd dump the GL-5 and go with one of the GL-4 compatible oils. Why chance the trans for a few bucks? I wanted to change my oil, and I sure learned a lot from this discussion.

The rear end uses the GL-5 rated oil. I had a well known rear end builder state with limited slips etc. to use only petroleum oil, but be sure to change in annually. I know this flies in the face of D/C's recommendation and what everyone else is saying, but this is what I was told when I had my rear end rebuilt. Use the 75-140W oil if you do. I've been using it and to date no problem towing my 5er, but now it will be with a large cabover camper, so we'll see.

If you do go with the recommended syntorq, Standard transmission is a good (i. e. reasonable) choice. Even with shipping it isn't bad. I think my last galon was around $50.

I called Standard Transmission and the Syntorq was $50 for a gallon, but shipping was $30. I checked out Quad 4X4, the Syntorq was $50 a gallon but shipping was $12. Not much decision there.

This was posted on a NV4500 transmission supplier's site. Nothing new, and I am surprised they don't recommend changing the oil. Guess that's why they are in the transmission business!:)

"Lubrication:

The synchronizer design of the NV4500 demands a specific 90W synthetic oil. The leading cause of GM and Dodge warranty claims on NV4500's are failures due to improper oil choice. The factory service manual for the NV4500 indicates the first oil fill is a lifetime factory fill. If you receive a new NV4500 and it is empty it should be filled with the factory specified oil and not changed unless contamination occurs. The easily identifiable look and smell of the OEM synthetic oil is like no other oil. The GM part no. for the correct oil is 12346191. Use of ANY other oil in the NV4500 will lead to failure and also voids any chance of a warranty claim"
