my friend has a 95 4x4 with a 5spd transmission, when shifting down from 3rd to second, the gears grind..... what could be causing this? any suggestions for a fix? whats it going to cost him?

Thanks for any help

The syncro's align the gears when you shift to prevent grinding. when they wear out the gears grind. To replace them requires removing the trans and basically tearing the whole thing down. This would be a good time to replace the bearings if he isn't good about changing the oil in the trans. Also fix the fifth gear nut or put in a fully splined mainshaft if he tows much or runs high HP.

FYI: Although the grinding sounds bad, it's not the sound of the actual gears, since they're in constant mesh. The noise is the selector dogs "barking", they have coarse teeth to lock a gear set to their respective shafts. Although the dogs are very strong, they will get damaged in short order if the repairs aren't taken care of.
