I wasnt in the truck i am about 150 miles away from it but the guy driving it said that he was going down the interstate with the cruise control set at 65, he heard a loud pop and it was like the truck slid out of gear then the engine died. HE shoved the clutch in and restarted and let out of the clutch now when he lets out of the clutch you can hear a low sounding grinding noise ( he described it as the noise a cordless drill makes when it is almost dead). The truck will only move a little in 4th gear (high range) just grind in all other gears including reverse. I instruccted him to try low range too and no go thier either. Any ideas what is wrong with it? Clutch, input shaft, the whole thing. Thanks for the ideas and info. DOes anyone have procedure list of how to remove the transmission in one of these (this will be my first) with any tips, tricks, special little tools to have on hand. Thanks alot Travis

P. S. we need to do this on the cheap side he has only had the truck about a month and hasnt even paid the taxes on it yet, he was on his way back from picking up the title tonight.

sounds like he needs to go back and have a chat with whoever he bought the truck from!  then... probably not put plates on the truck for awhile and get the transmission fixed with the money he WAS going to use for the taxes.

Hmmm... .

Well, if the truck only moves in 4th gear, maybe something happened to the gears on the countershaft, or countershaft itself. I say this becuase 4th gear is the only gear that directly connects inputshaft to the outputshaft of the transmission. Of course, this is just a guess. Good luck with it.

scaramblin, i read about you having the same trouble sent you a pm guess you didnt see it. Is this something that can be easily fixed in my garage with the transmission out, does it require a complet e rebuild. what is involved. Need to fix this thing cheeeapp. The transmission had been making alittle bearing noise going down the road, as 120k on it. Travis

Travis,

I just got your private message. This situation sounds similar to mine, but my engine never stalled. I had the cruise on at about 65 in 5th gear and I noticed a slight groaning sound. At first really quiet and it got progressively louder over about a minute. Then a bang , followed by loud crunching sounds.

I put in the clutch and ground it into 4th gear(direct drive). All other gears were gone. I drove in this gear for 6hrs until I got low on fuel. I then pulled into a truckstop at 11:00 pm. and called it a night.

The next morning I took out the front drive shaft and started in 4th low range and grinding it into 4th high. A few times as I was trying to get rolling the transmission locked up and the truck stopped immediately. Our little dog hit the front windshield after being thrown from my wifes lap. This was from about 10mph with a 4000lb slide out camper on the back. When it would lock up, putting in the clutch would not help, since the binding was happening behind the clutch. I drive the remaining 800 miles with a broken countershaft and one gear. I had to slow down before any red lights and time it so I could keep on rolling at the intersection. Sometimes down to 500rpm!!! with a GVW of over 11,000lbs. Not an experience I want again!

I borrowed a 5spd from a friend who owns a wrecking business ,and put it in at my campsite with my floor jack. He shipped it to Arizona from British Columbia.

When I got back to Canada I bought a 2002 6spd from him with 12,000 miles on it. I gave him my broken 5spd, bellhousing,flywheel,clutch,4x4 shifter etc. for all the needed 6spd parts plus $2,500. Quite a good deal in my opinion.

The conversion was very easy. I'm an insurance broker, and I did the conversion myself in about 6hrs. A good mechanic could probably do it quicker. (when I say 6hrs, this doesn't include the time to get the driveshafts professionally lengthend and shortened 6" and I didn't install the 4x4 shifter to the floor boards yet) The 4x4 shifter is totally different since there is nowhere to bolt it to the 6spd as there is on the 5spd . The new 4x4 shifter must be bolted to the floor instead.
